    DID YOU KNOW

    Bruce Henderson, co-owner, chairman and CEO of Henderson Services, graduated from UofL with both his bachelor’s and master’s in Electrical Engineering. He is the 2017 Alumnus of the Year. The Alumni Association also selected 13 Alumni Fellows representing UofL schools, colleges and units, and they will all be honored Thursday night

     

    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

    Dr. Maria Fernanda Nota, a pediatrician at UofL Pediatrics Kosair Charity Center, focuses on immigrant health and children with special needs. She also leads a support program for Latino families of children with special needs in Louisville and Lexington called Una Mano Amiga. Nota, who is from Argentina, was recently highlighted by WHAS for Hispanic Heritage Month.

    Street closures for UofL Homecoming Parade

    October 13, 6 p.m., Belknap Campus
    The UofL Homecoming Parade is Friday at 6 p.m. The following streets will be closed until the parade passes: W Cardinal Blvd from S 3rd St to S 4th St; 3rd St between W Cardinal Blvd to Eastern Pkwy; Eastern Pkwy from S 3rd St to Hahn St. We invite you to join us for the parade with grand marshal Kelsi Worrell. The best viewing will be along 3rd Street in front of Grawemeyer Hall.

    ‘Reel’ Latin American Film Festival: various showings this week

    October 12, 7 p.m., Floyd Theater; Free and open to public

    “El Amparo” by Robert Calzadilla (Colombia, Venezuela, 2016), presented by Dr. Gregory Hutcheson (Classical and Modern Languages). Repeat showing on Fri., Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. in 104W Ekstrom Library. This film is a drama based on the true story of a 1988 massacre.  “Tempest by Tatiana Hueso” (Mexico, 2016) will be shown on Sat., Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. in the Floyd Theater. Presented by Dr. Christine Ehrick (History). This film narrates the parallel journey of two women and has been screened worldwide.

    Have you been a victim of the recent ransomware or email phishing attacks? Are you a new employee or are you just in need of an email security refresher? If you have questions about email security then this training is for you. Lisa Cooper will present topics including recent email viruses, email encryption, VPN utilization, passwords, Wi-Fi and cell phone security. You will also learn how to spot bogus email messages. In addition we will provide you with helpful tips for managing your inbox.

    Daisy Girl Scout Workshop

    October 21, 10 a.m. to noon, Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium; $12/scout; $3/adult UofL faculty/staff/students (normally $15/scout; $5/adult)

    The “It’s Your Planet-Love It! Between Earth and Sky” Daisy workshop is filled with hands-on activities that teach about seed dispersion and the importance of water. Girls plant seeds to take home to observe and take a ride on our virtual space ship to get a birds eye view of habitats around the world.

    American Heart Association CPR Training is available October 17, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Classes are also available on Nov. 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Nov. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Dec. 5, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Dec. 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. All classes are at the Paris Simulation Center, Bldg.     Beer and science with a twist

    October 18, 7-9 p.m., Holsopple Brewing, 8023 Catherine Ln., 40222; Free

    On Oct. 18, the Beer with a Scientist program will present an informal gathering at an alternate venue, Holsopple Brewing in Lyndon. There you will have the chance to talk science and ask questions about anything related to biomedical science (especially cancer) with Levi Beverly, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Medicine at UofL and founder of Louisville Underground Science.

    Biology Department Seminar Series Presents Guest Speaker Dr. Jonathan Warawa, UofL

    October 13, noon, Chao Auditorium

    “Biodefense Burkholderia therapies: where to begin with preparedness” is the topic. Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram-negative pathogen which causes a respiratory disease, giving rise to a lethal septicemia. To facilitate its life in tropical soils, it possesses several genetic loci to render it resistant to numerous classes of antibiotics, limiting treatment options. Combined with this, there is no licensed vaccine. This talk will highlight approaches to create new treatment options for this biodefen.

    Astronomy Bullitt lecture: News from Jupiter

    October 26, 6:30 – 8 p.m., Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium

    Planetary Scientist Dr. Candice Hansen will present new discoveries from the Juno probe to Jupiter, which arrived last year. She is responsible for the development of JunoCam, which employs citizen-scientists to combine and color images. New details about giant storms and Jupiter’s magnetic field have already been revealed. Light refreshments and a chance to talk with Dr. Hansen will follow.

    Prayer Research

    Researchers at the University of Louisville and Penn State are looking for participants to complete a 45-minute survey on their private prayer behaviors and beliefs. Questions or concerns about the study can be directed to Dr. Stephanie Winkeljohn Black (smw78@psu.edu). The study has been approved by the IRBs at the University of Louisville (IRB # 16.1255) and Penn State. The survey is online.
