DID YOU KNOW There are nearly 1,000 international students and scholars on campus and more than 900 students study abroad. The International Center celebrates the benefits of international education through non-immigrant students and scholars, study abroad opportunities, student and faculty travel/exchanges and scholarships. Since 2000, the U.S. Department of State and Education have sponsored International Education Week (IEW), recognizing all aspects of international exchange. More information about IEW, Nov. 13-17, and collaborative events is available on the International Center website.
FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES Professor Sergio Mendes and his research team (PhD student Jafar Ghithan and Prof. Martin O’Toole, Bioengineering) have developed an innovative approach to detect and quantify influenza virus molecules by incorporating an electro-optically responsive biological assay onto their novel photonic device. This work has been selected for the special issue of Optics & Photonics News magazine as the most exciting peer-reviewed research that has emerged in the field in the past 12 months.

Miscellaneous UofL hires top North Carolina higher education finance leader to be new CFOAfter an extensive search involving faculty, staff, students and others, UofL has named North Carolina’s top higher education finance official to serve as its chief financial officer. Jonathan Pruitt, senior vice president for finance and budget and chief financial officer at the University of North Carolina System, will assume the CFO role at UofL, pending Board of Trustees approval. Pruitt is scheduled to join the UofL team Jan. 16, 2018. For more info go to UofL News.
Louisville Water project will impact traffic routes around UofL starting MondayIn order to accommodate the university’s Winter Session, the Louisville Water will begin the renovation of the 48-inch transmission main in Eastern Parkway on Mon., Nov. 6. The project will start at I-65 and Crittenden drive. This will require the closure of two westbound mains from Concord Drive to I-65. The project is expected to impact this area for approximately 4 weeks. The original plan was to start at Eastern Parkway and Beargrass Creek, however the bridge work presented complications. In addition to the lane closures, the southbound ramp from Crittenden Drive to Eastern Parkway will be closed. Throughout the project, Louisville Water will continue to update customers on the impact of the work. Additional Information: website
