Winter Dissertation Writing Mini-Retreat

The University Writing Center and the Graduate Student Council announces its first Winter Dissertation Writing Mini-Retreat We encourage all writers currently working on their dissertations to apply. In past retreats, we have worked with writers representing a range of disciplines from Public Health to Engineering to Social Work to Humanities. The mini-retreat is scheduled for January 20 and 27.

Radioactive Material Orders
Thanksgiving Ordering Schedule: Last day to order Radioactive Isotopes will be Friday, November 17 for delivery on Monday, November 20. The University will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 23 and 24. We will reopen on Monday, November 27 and will resume ordering.

Angel Tree Initiative underway

Guidance on salary cap for DHHS & NIH sponsored programs
The Office of Sponsored Programs Administration has developed guidance related to salary cap requirements for Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHHS) sponsored programs. The guidance includes a worksheet to aid in the calculation of salary that can be charged directly to DHHS awards as well as salary “over the cap” that must be booked and tracked separately per Federal requirements. The salary cap requirement applies not only to NIH awards but also to CDC, HRSA and other DHHS awards.

Blackboard will be offline Jan. 5-7 for upgrade
In order to accommodate the university’s Winter Session, the Blackboard upgrade is moving. Blackboard upgrade will start on Friday, January 5 at 6 p.m. and run through Sunday, January 7 at 8 p.m. and will be unavailable during that time. Applications integrated with Blackboard will also be unavailable, such as Panopto and Collaborate.

Signature Partnership 10-Year Celebration Video
2017 marks the university’s decade long collaboration with West Louisville known as the Signature Partnership Initiative. A ceremony was held earlier this fall to commemorate the occasion. Bioengineering Dept. Seminar Series: Metabolic Regulation of Vascular Ion Channel Activity
Nov. 16, noon to 1:30 p.m., Shumaker Building, Room 139
This talk, presented by UofL’s Dr. Matthew Nystoriak, will focus on the use of patch clamp electrophysiology, myography, and advanced cellular imaging to evaluate ion channel function in the vasculature to improve understanding of how ion channel proteins are functionally regulated by metabolic signals in an effort to reveal novel targets for treatment of cardiovascular disease associated with aberrant regulation of vascular tone.

Women’s Self-Defense
November 29, 5-8 p.m., Student Activities Center, room #W309K; Free
There is still space available for the R.A.D. self-defense program designed and created specifically for women. The program consists of easy to learn, effectively proven physical defense techniques, taught by certified instructors, during the hands-on nine (9) hour program. Classes are open to faculty, staff and students. The class will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 29, and then for three consecutive Wednesdays, with each session lasting three hours.

Final GHN Historical Walking Tour with Tom Owen

The last Get Healthy Now Historical Walking Tour for 2017 is scheduled for Wednesday, November 15, 12-12:50 p.m. Those interested in participating just need to meet up at the Ekstrom Library Porch (interior of campus side, across from Humanities Building). The tour will be led by Dr. Tom Owen, veteran walking tour raconteur and local historian, who has been an archivist at UofL’s Archives and Special Collections for 42 years.

Green Tip: It’s America Recycles Day
November 15
Today is America Recycles Day – your opportunity to take the pledge and encourage your students and colleagues to recycle all they can, which is just about everything at UofL. All UofL recycling bins accept any type of paper, plastics, metals, glass and cardboard. Don’t worry about how clean/empty it is, just make sure it’s going in the right bin. Special collections are available for recycling less common items such as batteries, chemicals, electronics, lighting, organics, and even reusable items.

Medicine Grand Rounds: Dr. Lina Mackelaite

Medicine Grand Rounds features Lina Mackelaite, MD, assistant professor of medicine and Medical Director, Kidney and Kidney-Pancreas Transplantation in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at UofL. Mackelaite will present “Kidney Transplantation: How Are We Doing in Louisville?” focusing on an overview of the transplant program in Louisville, reviewing strategies to transplant more patients with End Stage Kidney Disease, and increasing graft survival after transplantation.
