DID YOU KNOW Cornell University psychologist Robert Sternberg has won the 2018 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Psychology for his concept of “successful intelligence.” Sternberg, a professor of human development, was selected for his view that intelligence encompasses several components that help people succeed in different ways in their own environments.
Faculty and staff notables Gaurang Vaidya, a second year cardiology fellow at UofL, has received the prestigious Postgraduate Award from the Alpha Omega Alpha Society for research on “Beta Blocker Use in LVADs is Associated with Lower proBNP and is not Associated with Heart Failure Hospitalizations or an Increase in Adverse Events.”

Deadline extended for the 16th Annual Study Abroad Program in PanamaThe deadline for the 16th Annual Study Abroad Program in Panama, sponsored by the Latin American and Latino Studies Program and the Department of Communication has been extended until February 1, 2018, or until 20 participants have been accepted. May 2-3 (on campus) and May 7-26 (Panama). No payments until March. Panama Scholar Awards are given to all participants.
Intergenerational and festive sock drive for cancer patientsThe Institute for Sustainable Health & Optimal Aging invite UofL faculty, staff, and students to join them in collaborating with the 2018 Leadership Louisville Ignite Class for their intergenerational and festive “Sock it to me” Challenge. Festive socks for infants to adults are being collected for Norton Healthcare’s cancer patients and other organizations in the Kentuckiana area. During this year’s Optimal Aging Month in September, the focus was to continue to find ways throughout the year to spread compassion across generations. In this season of giving, for the challenge, festive socks withand without grips on the bottom are accepted. This challenge will also support additional organizations in the community as socks for hospital patients MUST have the grips on the bottom. Socks can be delivered to the Institute, 300 E. Market St., Suite 200, between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or to have your department or group’s contributions picked-up, contact Lisa Baunach at 852-5159 or via email.
