    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

UofL neurology professor Robert P. Friedland, MD, has joined Matthew R. Chapman, PhD, professor at the University of Michigan, to propose a new term to describe an interaction between gut microbiota and the brain in an article released in PLOS Pathogens. They propose the term “mapranosis” for the process by which amyloid proteins produced by microbes alter the structure of proteins and enhance inflammation in the nervous system, thereby initiating or augmenting brain disease.

    Sustainability

Green Tip: New Year’s resolution to eat less meat

Did you know that in today’s industrial food system, a meat-centered diet requires 19 times as much land and 13 times as much water as a plant-based diet? Or that vegetarian men face only a 4-percent average risk of death from heart attack vs. 50-percent risk on meat-based diets? This year resolve to choose meatless options that are easier on you and the planet. Hearty, meatless meals can be requested from caterers or found daily at The Ville Grill & most campus dining venues – just ask.
