In 1937, Margaret Mattingly became the first woman to graduate from the Speed School of Engineering. Digital Collections has a photo of her working on machinery alongside her male classmates in 1936. It is available online.
FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES
Research Features has published its first “Women in Science” issue, which was introduced last week to coincide with International Women’s Day. There are 18 women featured in the issue, including UofL’s Olfa Nasraoui, endowed chair of e-commerce and the founding director of the Knowledge Discovery & Web Mining Lab. Nasraoui is also a professor of Computer Engineering and Computer Science.

J.B. Speed School of Engineering to host Girls Rule STEM Summit
April 14, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Speed School; public, $25
JB Speed School of Engineering will host a full day of sessions designed to engage self-identified girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) content through hands-on experiences. Parents, guardians, and leaders learn how to engage girls in STEM and receive great resources to continue STEM learning after the program ends.

Book Collection Drive
The UofL Women’s Center is partnering with the Family Scholar House and Gray’s Bookstore for a Book Collection Drive to benefit the Women’s Center Student Parent Association and W4W Student Board and the Family Scholar House. UofL faculty can drop off old editions of textbooks that are no longer used or spare copies of texts that have been piling up over several semesters. Dates: Monday, April 2-Monday, April 30. Social Justice Consortium Undergraduate Research Fellowship applications due soon

The Cooperative Consortium for Transdisciplinary Social Justice Research has released its application for up to 12 new undergraduate research fellows. Selected fellows will be matched with one of the Consortium’s funded research teams and will receive a $500 stipend each semester. Opportunities for students include community-building, research support, and student-centered professional development. Applications are due by March 23 and are available online.

Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)
The SROP provides UofL undergraduate students who would like to know more about graduate-level education at the university, with a 10-week research-intensive experience in a department that offers graduate degrees. Mentors will provide students with individualized research projects. All UofL departments with graduate programs will be supported. Students should be, preferably, in their sophomore or junior year of study. The deadline is March 15. More information is available online.

Dept. of Medicine Releases Updated NIH R01 & R03/21 Budget Spreadsheets – New Salary Cap
The Department of Medicine of Medicine has released revised R01 and R03/21 spreadsheets, updating the NIH cap to $189,600. The new forms can be found online under “NIH Budget Forms and PCFs.”

Dissertation survey on work experience and well-being
Kobena Osam, a doctoral student in the College of Education and Human Development, is conducting for his dissertation a survey on the role of psychological climate, engagement and well-being in the higher education work place. Are you a parent with hearing loss who has adult children? Or an adult child of a parent with hearing loss?
Researchers in the Program in Audiology are conducting a study to explore the impact of confirmed hearing loss on individuals with hearing loss and their adult children. This information will help to develop more effective hearing healthcare. To participate we will interview both the parent with hearing loss and the adult child. Participants will be paid $25.
