Nominations open for Distinguished Faculty Awards and Outstanding Performance Awards

The President and Provost are pleased to announce the return of the Distinguished Faculty Awards and, for staff, the Outstanding Performance Awards.

• Distinguished Faculty: The university honors faculty who bring distinction to the university in three categories: Outstanding Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity Awards; Distinguished Service Awards; and Distinguished Teaching Professor Awards. Each recipient will receive an academic medallion and a cash award of $1,000. Deadline for nominations is Wednesday, April 11. Nominations can be made online.
• Outstanding Performance: The university also recognizes classified and professional/administrative staff for excellent performance and commitment to service. Each recipient will receive a plaque, $1,000 cash award and a letter of appreciation for his or her personnel file. Nomination deadline is Friday, April 13. Nominations can be made online.

Documentary Screening: Talking Black in America

April 12, 4:30-7 p.m., Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library
Dr. Walt Wolfram, William C. Friday Distinguished Professor at North Carolina State University and executive producer, joins the University of Louisville community for a screening of his critically acclaimed documentary. A Q&A will follow. This event is free and open to the public.

Celebration of Student Writing

April 11, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Ekstrom Library Learning Commons and The Writing Center
Students, faculty and staff are invited to the 2018 Celebration of Student Writing. Students will present posters and papers, participate in digital “maker” activities, read their poetry, and earn opportunities for prize drawings with each event attended. The Writing Center, Ekstrom Library and the Digital Media Suite are organizing and leading the event.

Passport Book + Application Fee: $145; Passport Book, Card + Application Fee: $175, Passport Renewal: $110; two passport photos from Cardinal Card Office: $10. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the date of the Passport Fair has been changed. The event is open to faculty, staff, students, and the public. Obtain two passport sized photos from the Cardinal Card Office for $10. Only personal checks or money orders will be accepted per USPS.

Free trees at UofL Arbor Day Celebration

April 6, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., outside front entrance, University Pointe (at end of Greek Row), Belknap Campus
Friday is Arbor Day in Kentucky. Join us for a celebration of UofL’s ongoing commitment to trees and our Tree Campus USA status (for 8 years running). At noon, you can help us plant a tree on campus.  We’ll be giving away 100 native Shortleaf Pines (which grow to 70′-100′), 100 native Pawpaw fruit trees, pollinator-friendly plant seeds, local apples and bike-blender tree-product smoothies.

College Women Leadership Conference (CWLC)

Embracing Intersectionality, activism, media representation and the workplace are topics of discussion at the upcoming CWLC sponsored by the UofL Women’s Center Women 4 Women Student Board. Keynote speakers will include Jamira Burley, National Youth Advocate and Tori Murden McClure, president, Spalding University. 28th Annual UofL Neuroscience Day

GHN Historical Walking Tour with Tom Owen

Historical Walking Wednesdays with UofL’s Tom Owen are back for 2018. Get Healthy Now is sponsoring Historical Walking Tours through Belknap campus every Wednesday from April 11 to April 25. Those interested in participating will meet up at the Ekstrom Library Porch (interior of campus side, across from Humanities Building). The tours will be led by Dr. Tom Owen, veteran walking tour raconteur and local historian, who has been an archivist at UofL’s Archives and Special Collections for 43 years.

iRIS project submission training offered by Office of Research Integrity

“An Introduction to Project Submissions in iRIS” aims to provide an understanding of getting into the iRIS system and navigating through the eProposal form and Sponsor Packets. Biology Department Seminar Series presents Dr. Jelena Bujan, UofL

April 6, noon, Room 139 Shumaker Research Building
The topic, “Physiological and behavioral adaptations of Neotropical canopy ants” will be presented by Dr. Jelena Bujan, an insect ecologist who received her PhD from the University of Oklahoma in 2017. She is currently a Postdoctoral Associate in Dr. Steve Yanoviak’s lab at UofL, where she is exploring the effects of extreme temperatures on the behavior and ecology of tropical rainforest ants.

Carnosine for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Study

The UofL Health Sciences Center is seeking PAD patients between age 50-80 with and without claudication to determine whether Carnosine/Placebo supplementation for 6 months improves walking ability. The study has been approved by UofL IRB (#16.0047). Principal Investigators are Shahid Baba,PhD/Amit Dwivedi,MD.

Gary S. Marshall, MD, UofL Professor of Pediatrics, will present “Perspectives on Vaccine Hesitancy.” Learners will hear about the tendency for people to accept anecdotal experiences as indicative of causal relationships, develop strategies to counteract thought patterns that lead to vaccine hesitancy, and discuss maintaining high immunization rates despite pervasive anti-vaccinationism. CME credit will be provided.
