LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the fifth time, the University of Louisville has earned a spot as one of the nation’s top producers of prestigious student Fulbright awards.
The list, released today by the Fulbright organization, was published in the Chronicle of Higher Education. In addition to 2018-2019, UofL made the list of top producers at research institutions in 2010-2011; 2011-2012; 2015-2016 and 2016-2017.
There have been 121 UofL student Fulbright winners since 2003, more than all other Kentucky public institutions combined. UofL’s success in competitions for prominent scholarships has become a key point for student recruitment.
“We were pretty sure we would make the top producers list when we ended up with 11 Fulbrights last year,” said Charlie Leonard, who heads the office of National and International Scholarship Opportunities. “Our university really pulls out all the stops to help students aspire to their highest potential. When we see our name on a list with institutions like Brown, Princeton and Georgetown, it’s very gratifying.”
Leonard said 32 UofL scholars have applied for the 2019 awards and 21 of those applicants have already made it to the semifinalist phase. Final selections are made by each country and are typically announced in spring and early summer.
The Fulbright program is sponsored by the U. S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and promotes cultural exchanges with more than 140 countries.
