Nominations open for Distinguished Faculty Awards and Outstanding Performance Awards

The President and Provost are pleased to announce the return of the Distinguished Faculty Awards and, for staff, the Outstanding Performance Awards.

• Distinguished Faculty: The university honors faculty who bring distinction to the university in three categories: Outstanding Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity Awards; Distinguished Service Awards; and Distinguished Teaching Professor Awards. Each recipient will receive an academic medallion and a cash award of $1,000. Deadline for nominations is Wednesday, April 11. Nominations can be made online.
• Outstanding Performance: The university also recognizes classified and professional/administrative staff for excellent performance and commitment to service. Each recipient will receive a plaque, $1,000 cash award and a letter of appreciation for his or her personnel file. Nomination deadline is Friday, April 13. Nominations can be made online.

New chemical hazardous waste management requirements for work areas

Due to new EPA requirements, effective immediately, personnel who work with chemicals and generate chemical hazardous waste must meet new chemical waste container labeling requirements. Additionally, work locations that store hazardous chemicals and/or hazardous waste must complete an All Hazard Door Sign by May 15 that can be readily seen by an emergency responder. GHN Historical Walking Tour with Tom Owen

Historical Walking Wednesdays with UofL’s Tom Owen are back for 2018. Get Healthy Now is sponsoring Historical Walking Tours through Belknap campus every Wednesday from April 11 to April 25. The tours will be led by Dr. Tom Owen, veteran walking tour raconteur and local historian, who has been an archivist at UofL’s Archives and Special Collections for 43 years.

Grawemeyer Award winners to give public talks this week

Recipients of the 2018 Grawemeyer Awards will present their award-winning ideas at the University of Louisville and the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary April 10-12. All of the talks are free and open to the public:

Surfing to the Extremes: How Social Media is Polarizing Public Opinion

Jason Gainous, professor of Political Science, will talk about how social media has dramatically altered the way citizens get news and the type of information they consume. People are motivated to avoid information that challenges their predispositions: their social media feeds get populated with attitude-reinforcing information creating their own personal filter bubble and echo chamber. Dr. Laurel Harduar-Morano, Epidemic Intelligence Officer with NIOSH, will present “Occupational Patterns in Drug and Opioid-Involved Overdose Deaths – United States, 2007 to 2012.” The talk will explore overdose deaths of unintentional or undetermined intent by usual occupation. Opioid-related overdoses and drug sub-types will also be discussed. The results of the study provide valuable information for combating the opioid epidemic and understanding the overall burden in the U.S. population.

Bioengineering Department Seminar Series: ‘Bioprocessing Pharmaceuticals from Plant Production Systems’

Dr. Joshua Fuqua will discuss how plant-based protein production systems are an expression platform that provide novel challenges and opportunities to express proteins that are not well suited to other expression technology. Research study recruiting women who have not used hormonal contraceptives in last three  months

Help us understand the experiences of women. Study involves one or two visits to the lab (2 hours total) and 30 minutes of home procedures Eligibility: women with a regular menstrual cycle. Ineligibility: diagnosed with a psychological disorder, history of psychological or psychiatric treatment, pregnant or breastfeeding in the last three months, had a serious car accident, had a loved one in a serious car accident (potential serious injury or death). Kathy Carter and John Caruso of The Department of Health and Sport Sciences seek subjects for a study to examine the impact of diet on workouts done on a robotic exoskeleton designed for use during manned space flight.
