In 1996, the functions of the College of Health and Social Services were realigned, resulting in a separate Kent School of Social Work and a School of Allied Health Sciences. By 1998, Allied Health had given way to the School of Public Health and Information Sciences.

Paula J. Bates, PhD, was among the 175 Fellows inducted into the National Academy of Inventors on April 6 in Boston. A researcher with the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, Bates is both UofL’s and Kentucky’s fourth NAI Fellow.

The public is invited to a School of Nursing Baby Shower on May 17 supporting the purchase of a High-Fidelity Birthing Simulator for student learning. At the free event, you can watch birthing simulator demonstrations, play to win prizes, and enjoy refreshments. The 5th annual UofL Pathways Women’s Leadership Conference registration is now open. This year, with respect to budget constraints and resources, the conference will be a half-day at half-price. Focused on leadership development, the May 19 conference will be opened by Dean Toni Ganzel. Dawne Gee, local news anchor and host, with be the keynote speaker.

HR will host Knowing the Facts About Identity Theft sessions on the HSC and Belknap campuses this week through our EAP vendor, Human Development. Identity theft is defined as the fraudulent acquisition and use of a person’s private identifying information, typically for financial gain. The session will outline the various risks, preventive measures, and strategic processes to resolve the aftermath, should you become a victim. No registration required.

 

Authors Diana Hess and Paula McAvoy will discuss their award-winning work, which contends teachers should encourage conversations about difficult political issues because those discussions help students understand diverse points of view and become more politically engaged adults. Their book is based on a four-year study of teachers and students and provides case studies that showcase the power of the deliberative process in helping students hone thinking, reasoning and communication skills.

 

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology Seminar Series presents, “Bacterial antagonism in the mammalian gut microbiota,” by Laurie Comstock, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School.

Medicine Grand Rounds features Rakesh Gopinathannair, MD, MA, associate professor of medicine, and Marcus F. Stoddard, MD, professor of medicine at UofL. The will present “Percutaneous Left Atrial Appendage Closure for Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation” focusing on the role of LAA in embolic stroke and the rationale behind LAA closure, available technologies for percutaneous LAA closure, and cases and evidence on comparative efficacy of LAA closure vs. oral anticoagulation.
