4.) Symposium will examine ‘heat island effect’

This one-day symposium will explain and examine “urban heat islands,” city areas that are hotter than nearby rural areas. Louisville has been identified in a Georgia Tech study as an urban heat island. Among the topics to be discussed will be mitigation strategies, public health effects and research. Are you stressed? Is your child stressed, anxious, or worried? We can help. The UofL Developmental Psychopathology Lab is conducting a study examining the nature of worry and anxiety in parents and children. Parents and their children between the ages of 8 and 13 years are eligible to participate. Participants will be compensated $20 for their time and receive free diagnostic interviews, detailed feedback and a report outlining the results of our assessment.

Jason Wells, MD, UofL Assistant Professor, will present “Emergency Psychiatry.” Dr. Wells will discuss how to approach the suicidal patient and perform necessary interventions. He will explain how to de-escalate the agitated patient using non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic interventions. Dr. Wells will give a brief overview of the patient with altered mental status, and help the physician decide if it is a true psych disorder or a medical emergency. CME category one is available for both AAFP & ACCME accreditation.
