    1.) Get smart about your money @ your library

    April 10, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Ekstrom Library

    Free

    Ekstrom Library is hosting Money Smart Week @ your library.  Come hear financial experts talk about how to better manage personal finances.  A few of the topics to be covered are credit reports, retirement, identity theft, taxes and money habits.

     

    2.) Fight cancer and raise awareness at Relay for Life

    6 p.m. April 18 – 6 a.m., April 19, Multipurpose Room, Student Activities Center

    UofL’s American Cancer Society student group invites all faculty, staff and UofL community to battle against cancer at the eighth annual Relay for Life overnight fundraiser. There will be fun, family-friendly activities such as a hypnotist performance, student booths and dance parties. If you can’t make it to the event, honor a loved one with a Luminaria dedication or support a UofL student or faculty group. Visit UofL’s Relay for Life group page to donate now.

    5.) Grant Crafting Brown Bag Series continues

    April 9, noon to 1 p.m., Shumaker Building, Room 139

    This session of the Grant Crafting Brown Bag Series will focus on how to refine your idea to make it more fundable. The GCBB Series is brought to you by collaboration between the A&S and CEHD research offices. The presentation by Susanna Cornett of the A&S Research Office will last approximately 45 minutes, with time afterward for questions and discussion. Please feel free to bring your lunch.     6.) Students studying Chinese to present drama showcase

    April 11, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Room 100, Bingham Humanities Building

    U of L students studying Chinese will present a series of Chinese skits, comic dialogues, Chinese songs and music. Refreshments will be served from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. This is an opportunity for our students to share their unique experience of learning Chinese and Chinese culture with the university community.

     

    7.) Sigma Xi Bhatnagar Awards to be given

    April 23, 6:15; dinner 6:30 p.m.; lecture 7:30 p.m., University Club

    $25 professionals, $20 students

    Named for Prof. Kunwar Bhatnagar, the Bhatnagar Awards honor excellence in scientific research. The winner of the Bhatnagar competition will present his or her research in a manner suitable for a general audience. The presentation will last about an hour, with a question session following. There are six nominees for the award and their submitted published papers were judged by a panel of Sigma Xi volunteers.

    8.) Workshop will teach Persian dance

    April 27, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Miller Information Technology Center, Room 201

    Workshop participants $45, public $10

    Join us for a day full of fun, learn a few steps, experience a dance fusion, watch the show or perform. The morning session, Beautiful Basics of Persian Dance, will be led by Jo Hadley, professional dancer and founder of Crescent Moon Dance Co., who will introduce common elements of Persian dance, movements, steps, turns, poses, etc. The after-lunch session, Fantastical Fusions, will be led by professional dancer and UofL student Rya Baila. She will introduce the saucy styling of tribal belly dance.

    9.) iClicker to be discussed at Delphi

    Interested in learning more about iClicker? Please join the Delphi Center and Glen Garrett from iClicker for lunch and a session about iClicker/iClickerGo. iClicker is a tool that allows students to submit answers for in-class polling, and iClickerGo adds the convenience of using a smart phone or laptop as a substitute clicker. Lunch will be provided.

    10.) Children needed for pediatric migraines study

    April 9

    Dr. Michael Sowell of the neurology pediatric division is conducting a research study testing two medicines and placebo for migraine prevention in children and teens. Children and adolescents, ages 8 through 17 years, may be eligible to participate. Subjects will be expected to complete approximately eight study visits over 34 weeks of participation.

    Marco Buongiorno Nardelli, PhD, professor of physics and chemistry at the University of North Texas, is a pioneer of the development and applications of Density Functional Theory methods in the fields of computational materials and high performance simulations. He will speak on the topic High-throughput materials discovery and development: Using your own computer to search for novel materials.

    Cardiovascular Medicine Grand Rounds welcomes Roberto Bolli, MD. Dr. Bolli  is professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics; chief, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and director, Institute of Molecular Cardiology.     Department of Medicine Grand Rounds features Cynthia S. Rand, PhD, professor of medicine and associate dean for faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She will present Adherence With Asthma Therapy: Outcomes, Strategies and Innovations, focusing on the prevalence of low adherence and associated barriers to adherence, the relationship between adherence and asthma outcomes and listing strategies to improve adherence.
