    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    UofL was one of more than 70 schools and organizations that took part in for National Institutions Coming Out Day on April 7. The effort by United We Dream allowed middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities and other groups to show support for undocumented students. United We Dream advocates for the dignity and fair treatment of immigrant youth and families, regardless of immigration status, sexual orientation or gender identity.

    1.) UofL Day of Service is April 17

    With the support of President James Ramsey and Provost Shirley Willihnganz, UofL is offering a pilot program called the UofL Day of Service, to be held this year on April 17. All staff members are invited to participate. Three sites have been chosen for this service opportunity. Participants must sign up (subject to supervisor approval); transportation, food and materials provided.  While we are focusing this Day of Service around staff, faculty and students are welcome to participate if schedules permit.  For more information and to register, click here.

    2.) Fifth annual Open Walls exhibit registration is open

    Exhibit June 5-26, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Photographic Archives gallery, Ekstrom Library lower level

    Registration due May 28, 5 p.m.

    The 2015 Open Walls exhibit of artwork by UofL faculty and staff is scheduled for June 5 to 26 in the Photographic Archives gallery in the lower level of Ekstrom Library. The exhibit, which is in its fifth year, is an opportunity for faculty and staff who are not professional or exhibited artists to share their work. All media (i.e., paintings, photographs, woodworking, mixed media, fiber arts, jewelry, crafts) is accepted. Click on these links for the guidelines and the registration form.

    3.) Save the date for the next iClicker demo

    April 23, 10 a.m. to noon, Delphi Lab, Ekstrom Library Room 244

    If you are interested in iClicker or its mobile partner REEF Polling, you’ll want to attend this informational demo session. Please join the Delphi Center and Glen Garrett from iClicker for a session about iClicker/REEF Polling. iClicker is a tool that allows students to submit answers for in-class polling, and REEF Polling adds the convenience of using a smart phone or laptop as a substitute clicker. Refreshments will be provided for this session. Registration info coming.

    4.) Relieve stress with puppy therapy

    The end of the semester can be a stressful time. Plan to take time to unwind and de-stress with the help of a four-legged friend! Research shows that enjoying time with a furry friend can increase feelings of connection and improve blood pressure and cholesterol.     5.) HSC research forum is Tuesday

    The HSC Research Forum, co-sponsored by the executive vice president for health affairs and vice dean for research, School of Medicine, will address what’s new at the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), new regulations from the NIH including the new biosketch form, new UofL research policies and resources and the UofL Imaging Core Facility.

    6.) HSC Webinar on NIH Biosketch Format: keys to writing a compelling scientific narrative

    April 16, 10 to 11 a.m., Clinical & Translational Research Building, Room 123

    Encore Presentation! This taped webinar will cover which accomplishments to include and what not to mention. Learn how to highlight your most important work without sounding self-serving and the basic components of a solid narrative. Early investigators are likely not to have a long track record for the narrative, therefore, your presenter will cover career-stage specific aspects of the narrative that tell your story in a unique way. Light refreshments provided.

    9.) Free legal clinic for cancer patients

    The Kentucky Cancer Program will offer a free legal clinic for cancer patients, their families, and/or caregivers. Attorneys will be available to offer free help and advice on life planning documents (will, power or attorney, healthcare surrogate, living will, etc.), employee benefits during illness, and government assistance. A light dinner will be served. You must RSVP by April 13 by calling KCP at 852-6318.

    15.) William Wells and the Struggle for the Old Northwest topic at Filson

    Author William Heath will discuss the life of William Wells, who was captured on the Appalachian frontier by the Miami Indians at the age of thirteen. He was adopted by the tribe and in subsequent years was a go-between bridging the two cultures. The Filson is a member of A&S’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.
