    Glass artist and UofL associate professor Ché Rhodes, who is creating the first Grawemeyer Spirit Award, recently was part of an exhibit at the Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, Alabama, called “South by Southeast: Masters of Studio Glass.”

    UofL Today with Mark Hebert

    1.) ‘UofL Today with Mark Hebert’ schedule for Aug. 10-11

    Airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on 93.9 FM The Ville; replayed on Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m.

    UofL’s Mark Hebert hosts two weekly 30-minute programs focusing on research and insights from expert UofL faculty, as well as stories about our successful students, and staff and campus events. This week’s schedule:

    ·       Aug. 10: Dr. Greg Barnes, director of the UofL Autism Center; Diana Harper, a leader in cervical cancer research; entrepreneurship MBA students who won the “Super Bowl of investment competitions” with their company called InScope.

    ·       Aug. 11: J.B. Speed School of Engineering’s Bruce Alphenaar and his research on radiation’s impact on electronic devices; students who studied public health problems in China; Amanda Allen, Truman Scholar.

    2.) Strengthen your muscles while you relieve stress

    Build your overall body strength and relieve stress at the same time by trying our new strength-based yoga and stress relieving practices. Our Flow & Sculpt, Core Fusion, Melt Method and Tai Chi classes will help to relieve any tension through simple self-treatment with a “moving meditation” approach. All classes are available to all fitness levels. First class is always free! New registrants can purchase a $5 pass for unlimited access to all specialty classes at GHN during August.

    3.) Lab safety and hazardous waste training scheduled

    Aug. 13, 9 to 11:45 a.m., Nursing School, K Wing, Room 2034

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend this training. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years. Bring employee/student ID number to sign in. Attendees can pre-register at www.louisville.edu/dehs, however advance registration is not required.

    4.) Health Sciences Center tour Tuesday

    Get to know your way around the HSC campus. Sign up for the next tour coming up Tuesday, August 11 at 10 a.m. Meet in the second floor foyer of the Abell Admin Center at 323 East Chestnut St. Tour takes approximately 90 minutes. Register here.

    5.) Get support for making your course ADA compliant

    Twenty-five years ago, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law. This civil rights law prohibits discrimination in a number of areas, including education. If you would like to make sure that your online (and/or online materials used in face-to-face courses) are accessible to students with disabilities, Beth Case in the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning is available to help.

    6.) Save the date and register for PLAN’s Career Colloquium (rescheduled event)

    Aug. 21, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105; Deadline to register: Aug. 14

    In this intensive, half-day workshop, we will cover career basics, including job materials (resumes, CVs and cover letters), job interviewing, transferable skills and making a PLAN for your next steps. Ten registrants are needed for this event and lunch will be provided, so please register by August 14 to secure your spot!     7.) PLAN hosts workshop on teaching ‘to-dos’ and practices for graduate students

    Aug. 14, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    Are you a GTA who will be leading a class for the first time this fall? Want to make sure you’ve remembered everything you need to get started? Worried about how to help students learn what they’re supposed to learn? Come to this practical workshop that will help you think through your checklist of “to-dos,” active learning and classroom assessment, and plan to reach your class goals. Grad students interested in attending can find more info and register on the PLAN website.

    8.) Last chance to register for the fall Project Management Certificate program – new discounts!

    Earn your project management certificate from UofL Professional Development. This two-seminar program is based on the processes and knowledge areas in the Project Management Institute’s “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge.” A limited number of spaces in the first (and now) the second seminar are available at a 25 percent discount for UofL employees.     Sustainability

    9.) Paid UofL sustainability internships available in 2015-16

    Know students with a passion for advancing environmental, social and economic stewardship on campus? Let them know that UofL’s Sustainability Council will again offer paid internships in 2015-16. Interns work up to 10 hours a week on projects developed with Council supervision. Positions include: Sustainability Communication, Zero Waste, Bike Mechanic and Community Composting. Internships are open to any qualified UofL student (undergrad or grad, full- or part-time). Application deadline: Sept. 1.
