The Paul Weber Award for Departmental Excellence in Teaching seeks to foster and sustain a university-wide culture of teaching excellence by recognizing departments that demonstrate best practices in teaching and learning. Each year, one department is awarded up to $30,000. Stage one applications for this award are due August 14.

5.) Suzuki Steps Baby/Toddler free demonstration class
Aug. 29, 9 to 10 a.m. & 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., Suzuki Stars Music Academy, 3415 Bardstown Rd, Suite 308A
These are free demonstration music classes for babies ages 0 through 3 and their parents. Using traditional nursery rhymes, action songs, lullabies and instruments, these classes seek to build on the child’s natural delight in learning and lay the foundation for musical skills such as beat, rhythm, pitch and tone. Classes are led by Blaise Poth, Jennifer Shackleton and Cecilia Huerta-Lauf, all on faculty with the Community Music Program at UofL.
Additional Information: To RSVP, email Blaise Poth at suzukistrings@louisville.edu or call 502-639-7272.
6.) Call for applications: 2015-2016 seminar on teaching for new faculty
Sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning, this year-long cohort program is designed to jump-start new faculty members’ teaching careers. A cohort of 8-12 junior faculty members will meet six times during the academic year to explore and apply the findings of learning theory to their teaching at UofL. New application deadline: August 28.
Additional Information: Marie Kendall Brown, 852-7416. Read more about the seminar.
7.) Research study for women who have experienced recent miscarriage, stillbirth, or newborn death
We have developed a clinical survey which may help doctors and nurses better identify parents who need additional follow-up for intense grief after miscarriage, stillbirth, or newborn death. This study will simplify its scoring system so it can be widely used. We are looking for participants who are women over age 18 and have had a pregnancy loss in the last 8 weeks. Research involves taking 2 surveys now and again in 3 months; takes 15-20 minutes to complete. IRB#14.1176
