Join UofL President James Ramsey for a fun, easy 30-minute ride to campus during Welcome Week! Riders will leave together and then split into two groups – one heading to Belknap campus and one to HSC. This event is hosted in collaboration with UofL’s Get Healthy Now, Office of the President and the UofL Sustainability Council. President Ramsey seeks to set an example for the community, highlighting his support for a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. Save the date, RSVP and invite your UofL colleagues.

“Coaching has been so valuable for my well-being! Others notice the difference; my coach was cheerful, encouraging and helped me carry out my plan. Take advantage of the chance to partner with a Get Healthy Now wellness coach intern who will help you work toward any health behavior change. You will meet with the coach one hour a week for eight weeks. Our interns have successfully completed a semester of intensive coach training and are closely supervised by a certified coach.

Energize your mornings and ignite your metabolism in 30 minutes with a total body workout. Let this new class energize you in a way that nothing else can. This total body workout is designed to strengthen the cardiovascular system, tone muscles and boost balance, flexibility, endurance and speed. Exercise equipment may include: dumbbells, resistance bands, stability balls, BOSU, elevated benches and other equipment. Exercises can be modified to accommodate all fitness levels.

4.) Lunch presentation with Dr. Gerard Rabalais: Future Directions in Health Science Education

Join Dr. Gerard Rabalais and your HSC faculty colleagues as we envision the future of health science education at UofL. Dr. Rabalais will discuss his visits to eight medical schools thought to be at the forefront of innovation in medical school teaching, including four recipients of the 2013 AMA Awards for Acceleration of Innovation in Medical Education. 5.) Racial conflicts and the impact on our health

Police shootings of unarmed black and Latino men by white officers, removal of the confederate flag from state capitals and subsequent protests held by the KKK and other white supremacy groups are common news reports regarding racial conflicts in the U.S. Are these conflicts increasing and what are the impacts on our health? Join panelists (Dr. Latrica Best, John Chenault, Felix Garza, Monique Ingram and Dr. David Owen) as we explore these critical issues impacting our society.

Interested in learning about organic gardening and sustainability? Please join us at the Garden Commons next to the Cultural Center . We will be weeding, watering and harvesting . No prior experience needed. Come one and all! Tools and gloves are provided. Volunteers will be able to take home fresh herbs and yummy produce such as mint, lovage, thyme, kale, Swiss chard, tomatoes and whatever is ready to harvest .

9.) Save the Date: Women’s Equality Day

Come celebrate the 95th anniversary of women winning the right to vote at the Women’s Equality Day event. People often forget that women could not vote throughout the U.S. until 1920. The passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution made it possible. The goal of this day is to raise awareness of the historic suffrage movement, and to encourage women and men to exercise their right to vote. Information tables, entertainment and refreshments.

10.) Asthma research study
If you have asthma and are at least 60 years old, you may qualify for this longitudinal study that will examine the environmental and personal factors in asthma control. Participants must not be a current smoker or have other lung diseases. Participants will be compensated.
