    ·       VIDEO: The University of Louisville’s Summer Research Intern Program, sponsored by the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, gives high school students the opportunity to work under the guidance of some of the top cancer researchers in the nation. Each student is assigned one of the Cancer Center’s research faculty as a mentor and works in that researcher’s lab for eight weeks. JGBCC hosts the program as a way to introduce the area’s budding scientists to the university’s vibrant research community. Watch here.

    Farmers Markets

    1.) Gray Street: Tomato pies are back!

    Thursdays through Oct. 29, rain or shine, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 400 block of East Gray Street

    Some items available today will include: Pies (tomato, peach, blueberry), watermelon and watermelon jam, apples, peaches, raspberries, blackberries, cantaloupe, corn, okra, potatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, beets, cabbage, onions, green beans, cucumbers, sunflowers, zinnias, maple syrup, cookies, breads, chicken, pork, Mr. G’s Kettle Corn. Lunch trucks: Holy Mole (tacos); Red Top Gourmet Hot Dogs. Also homemade soaps, scrubs, lotions, lip balms and laundry butters from Summer Shade Soap Co. and the return of Sandi’s Styles fashion boutique on wheels.

    2.) Belknap: Fruits, veggies, entertainment and Take 20 Ab Lab session

    Thursdays through Oct. 15, rain or shine, 3:30 to 6 p.m., 3rd and Brandeis next to the Ville Grill.

    Some items available today will include: Peaches, purple hull peas, cherry tomatoes, kale, collards, Swiss chard, green beans, yellow squash, zucchini, cabbage, beets, green onions, local honey, apple butter, eggs, chicken, pork, a variety of homemade breads, cinnamon rolls, cookies, kettle corn, iced tea and lemon shake-ups. Also wood products made from reclaimed wood, garden accessories. Use Good Scents will have deodorants, lotion sticks, laundry detergent and other all-natural products. Entertainment by singer Garrett Schlaegel. Get Healthy Now will be on hand with jump ropes, hula hoops and sidewalk chalk for some healthy fun, and there will be a Take 20 Ab Lab session from 4:40 to 5 p.m.

    3.) Windows 10 not yet supported for UofL use       

    On July 29, 2015, Microsoft released its latest operating system – Windows 10. Information Technology is currently testing the system to ensure compatibility with all university services and has already identified issues with several applications. Once IT has approved Windows 10 for use on university machines, it will be made available through the iTechXpress store for departmental purchase and use by faculty and staff.

    4.) Move-in Day is August 19

    Wednesday, August 19 is Move-in Day for first year students. Please be aware that traffic will be heavy in and around residence hall areas. Anticipate delays moving around campus that day. Please help us welcome our new class; it’s an exciting time for students and their families.

    5.) Annual Effort Certification Reports due August 31

    Annual Effort Certification Reports for principal investigators/project directors, faculty, graduate, undergraduate students and staff who expended effort on a federally funded sponsored project(s) during the period of July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015 must be returned electronically to Sponsored Programs Financial Administration, grantfa@louisville.edu, by COB August 31. Responsibility for maintaining the original report with signature resides with the primary academic unit/dept/school. Effort Certification Reports may be accessed via University Reports at Financials: Financials-Department-Effort Reports.

    6.) Reminder of UofL policy on religious work-restricted holy days

    7.) Sign up for UofL Event Calendar training

    The Office of Communications and Marketing launched in 2014 a university-wide event marketing calendar (http://events.louisville.edu) for use by the campus community. Join us for an informal refresher course on using the calendar. We’ll cover adding events to the calendar and answer any specific questions you might have.     8.) Learn more about the Kentucky Commercialization Fund at UofL

    Aug. 6, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., JD Nichols Campus for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, 300 E Market St., Room 301 S

    The Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation (KSTC) announced the Kentucky Commercialization Fund (COMM-017) is available to help commercialize the technologies developed at Kentucky universities. This is an individual award not to exceed $75,000 per year and a mandatory pre-proposal must be submitted. UofL and KSTC are hosting a free informational session at the JD Nichols Campus for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. Refreshments will be served; please RSVP.

    This Friday, please join us for the annual pediatric neurology update featuring Michael S. Oldham, MD, MPH. Oldham is a clinical fellow in epilepsy in the department of neurology at the University of California in San Francisco, California. He will be presenting “Neonatal Neurological Emergencies.”

    12.) Family and Geriatric Medicine

    Aug. 7, 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., Jewish Hospital Bottigheimer Auditorium

    Gerald Wayne Dryden Jr., MD, division of gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition, department of medicine & bioengineering will present Evolving Issues and Treatment Strategies in IBD. Dr. Dryden will review the etiology of chronic inflammatory bowel disease and discuss diagnosis, review measures of disease activity, and introduce IBD thearpy. CME category 1 is available for both AAFP & ACCME accreditation.
