1.) Temporary HSC café opening today
Select products from Einstein Bros. Bagels and McAlister’s Deli will be on the menu at the Health Sciences Center when UofL Dining Services opens the Kornhauser Library Café Aug. 9. The café will remain until construction is completed on a new Au Bon Pain restaurant later this fall. It will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
2.) Webinar scheduled on regulatory/operational challenges of biorepositories
August 9, 2-3 p.m., Room 124, Clinical & Translational Research Bldg., HSC; Free
More research includes the use of biorepositories, however the creation and use of biorepositories can pose regulatory and operational challenges, especially in the face of a possibly changing regulatory landscape. This webinar will address repository models, repository management considerations, regulatory considerations (HHS, FDA, HIPAA), informed consent, and potential implications from the Common Rule Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM).

4.) PLAN offers workshop for GTAs on teaching to-dos for the new semester
August 12, 9 a.m.- 2 p.m., Room 105, Houchens Building, Belknap Campus
Leading a class for the first time this fall? Want to make sure you have what you need to get started? This workshop will help you think through your checklist of “to dos,” active learning and classroom assessment, and working towards the goals of your class. Feel free to bring a syllabus and any necessary technology to this session. Grad students interested in attending can register and find more info on the PLAN website.

5.) Girl Scout workshops to be held at Rauch Planetarium
September 10, Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium; UofL rate: $12 scout/$3 adult (regularly $15 scout/$5 adult)
Girl Scout workshops at the planetarium begin in September and are designed to support the It’s Your Planet – Love It series. Daisies (Between Earth and Sky), Brownies (Wonders of Water), Juniors (Energy Responsibility) and Cadettes (Breathe). Scouts delve into hands-on activities and demonstrations to assist them on their journey to earn a badge or award. Space is limited so sign up now.

6.) Four new faculty learning communities available for 2016-17
Aug. 26 deadline
The deadline to apply for one of four new faculty learning communities (FLCs) at the Teaching Innovation Learning Lab (TILL) is Friday, August 26. These FLCs bring together cross-disciplinary faculty to investigate such topics as active learning spaces, adaptive learning, innovation, and technology. These communities meet eight times throughout the course of the year to explore teaching innovation, assess impact on student learning, and present and publish results.

7.) Call for applications: 2016-2017 Seminar on Teaching for New Faculty
Aug. 26 deadline
Sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning, this year-long cohort program is designed to jump-start new faculty members’ teaching careers by providing a foundation of research-based principles about how learning works. A cohort of 8 to 12 junior faculty members will meet six times during the academic year to explore and apply the findings of learning theory to their teaching at UofL.
