    2.) Club invites faculty, staff to serve “Breakfast with Santa”

    The University Club management and staff are hosting Cochran Elementary School’s kindergartners, first, second and third graders for the Annual Breakfast with Santa event. Some students were treated Tuesday and a second group is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 11, at 9:30 a.m.  Faculty and staff can join the Club in greeting and serving the children; please contact Linda Johnson at 852-6996. Also, employees should feel free to drop off a stuffed teddy bear to add to the collection of gifts for the children.

     

    3.) Medical student stress buster event brings puppies to HSC campus

    Hand-in-Paw (HIP) Rescue is participating in the medical student Stress Buster Event sponsored by the Student Activities Board this Friday. Donations are urgently needed.     4.) Girl Scout workshops to be held at Gheens in January

    Various dates in January, 10 a.m. to noon, Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium

    $12/$3 UofL Affiliates

    Girl Scout workshops at the planetarium are designed to support the It’s Your Planet – Love It series. Daisies (Between Earth and Sky), Brownies (Wonders of Water), Juniors (Energy Responsibility) and Cadettes (Breathe) delve into hands-on activities and demonstrations to assist them on their journey to earn a badge or award. UofL faculty, staff and students get a special discount on the regular workshop rate of $15/scout and $5/adult. Be sure to sign up now for one of the January workshops!

    5.) Part-time faculty institute scheduled

    Ever wonder if you are gathering the right data from your students? Do you understand how to use formative and summative assessment? During the session, you will be invited to reflect upon your own process of assessment to determine how to make the most of the data you gather. Nisha Gupta and Il Barrow will help us identify new ways and tools to assess student learning and critical thinking. Join us for dinner and “Tools to Help You Blend Critical Thinking Standards into Everyday Assessment.”

    6.) Call for proposals: ACES KY: Black and Latino Student Symposium

    Jan. 16

    If you conduct research on or provide programs or services that impact the access, retention, and/or graduation of Black and Latino students within education, please respond to this call for proposal. The symposium will be February 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Swain Student Activities Center. Free registration. Keynote speakers are Mistalene Calleroz-White, PhD, dean of academic support services at Spalding University and Terrell Strayhorn, PhD, associate professor in education at Ohio State University.

    7.) Call for proposals: i2a SUN grants due Jan. 20

    Jan. 20

    The i2a Steering Committee invites proposals for 2015 SUN Grant projects. This committee will award up to $4,000 to successful proposals that support the sustained integration of i2a concepts and learning outcomes in undergraduate curricula at the department, program and/or unit level.

    9.) Webinar: Foundations and Societies: A strong funding ally for biomed researchers

    In this comprehensive Webinar, examples of some of the top grant-awarding foundations will be discussed, including their application and approval process, along with the purpose for the funds they provide. Also covered will be nonprofit organization philosophies toward awarding grants, highlighting the mindset similarities and differences from federal granting agencies. Tips will also be presented to help you find out about these organizations and how to best approach them with your ideas.

    10.) Registration open for Project Management Certificate program

    Earn your project management certificate from UofL Professional Development. This two-seminar program is based on the processes and knowledge areas in the Project Management Institute’s A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge. A limited number of spaces in the first seminar are available at a 25 percent discount for UofL employees. Classes begin February 12.

    15.) Movement Disorders Video Rounds

    Dr. Kathrin LaFaver will present Myoclonus Phenomenology and Case Studies at this month’s movement disorders video rounds. 1 CME or 1.2 CEU credit is available for physicians and nurses in attendance. Videos can be sent to Dr. LaFaver in advance, or brought to the video rounds on a flashdrive as long as patient consent has been obtained. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided.

    16.) Medicine: Dr. Matthew Cave

    Medicine Grand Rounds features Matthew Cave, MD, associate professor of medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biochemistry, and molecular biology at UofL and the Jewish Hospital Liver Transplant Program. Dr. Cave will present Hepatitis C Update, focusing on reviewing HCVs natural history and epidemiology, new HCV treatments, and discussing innovative HCV solutions at UofL/Robley Rex VA Medical Center.
