1.) “Inspired Science” at the Louisville Free Public Library

The UofL section of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, and Jefferson Community and Technical College will sponsor the “Inspired Science” exhibit at the Louisville Free Public Library. Delinda Buie, curator, Rare Books and Special Collections, Ekstrom Library, and R. Ted Steinbock, collector, will lead the discussion about the exhibit’s scientific books. The collection includes volumes by Kepler, Newton, Boyle, Hooke and Vesalius.

Diane Harper, MD, MPH, MS, chair of family and geriatric medicine, UofL, presents “Lessons We Have Learned in Cervical Cancer Prevention.” Attendees will be able to recognize the effectiveness of cytology screening for cervical cancer prevention; evaluate the importance of screening attendance for cancer detection efficacy; list HPV transmission factors; and critique the use of antibody titers after HPV vaccination for clinical vaccination decisions.

7.) Benefits Tip: Important Information regarding your Anthem ID Cards
Each covered member enrolled in the 2014 Anthem BlueCross BlueShield health plan is now receiving individual ID cards to their home. New ID cards are a combination ID card for health and Express Scripts benefits. Effective Jan. 1, Express Scripts ID cards are not valid. You must present your Anthem ID card for pharmacy benefits. Watch your mail; don’t throw away your card. If you have a medical need Jan. 1 or after and no card yet, simply print your ID card.

8.) Green Tip: Santa will thank you for saving energy this holiday season
Santa’s North Pole is melting, but you can help by taking a few simple steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. When you leave for the holidays, turn down thermostats, securely close windows and unplug chargers, printers and non-essential equipment. Get in the habit by switching everything off with one power strip. Always power down computers and turn off lights when vacating a room. Make a New Year’s resolution to replace incandescent and halogen lamps with CFLs or LED bulbs. Santa thanks you.

9.) 2014 Barnes and Noble Faculty and Staff Discount Cards
The 2014 Barnes and Noble Faculty and Staff 10 percent discount cards are now available from the Health Science Campus and the Belknap Campus bookstores for full-time faculty and staff. The 10 percent discount cards can be used at Barnes and Noble Superstores, located at 801 S. Hurstbourne Pkwy. and at 4100 Summit Plaza Dr. If you are unable to get over to the Health Science Campus or the Belknap Campus bookstore, please email Scott Schuknecht and a discount card will be sent to you via campus mail.
10.) GRE Workshop and Practice Exam with lunch for only $20

Psi Chi will sponsor a Kaplan conducted GRE workshop, lunch and practice exam. Registration is open to anyone interested in attending graduate school. Preregistration and payment are due no later than Jan. 30. Forward and make check payable to Psi Chi, Room 317 in the Life Sciences Building at the Belknap Campus. Include “GRE Workshop”, your name and email address, along with your sandwich selection of ham, turkey, roast beef or veggie. Additional details will be emailed to you.

11.) Deadline for departmental deposits via Bursar-Cashier’s Office
The deadline for all deposits and transmittals is noon, Dec. 23 in order to be posted by the Bursar’s Office for that day’s activity. Any departmental deposits or transmittals received after the deadline will be processed on Jan. 2. Thank you for your cooperation.

13.) Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)
The SROP provides UofL undergraduate students who would like to know more about graduate-level education at the university, with a 10-week research-intensive experience in a department that offers graduate degrees. Mentors will provide students with individualized research projects. All UofL departments with graduate programs will be supported. Students should be, preferably, in their sophomore or junior year of study. Deadline is March 3.
