1.) “Inspired Science” at the Louisville Free Public Library

The UofL section of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, and Jefferson Community and Technical College will sponsor the “Inspired Science” exhibit at the Louisville Free Public Library. Delinda Buie, curator, Rare Books and Special Collections, Ekstrom Library, and R. Ted Steinbock, collector, will lead the discussion about the exhibit’s scientific books. The collection includes volumes by Kepler, Newton, Boyle, Hooke and Vesalius.

Margie Namie, RN, MPH, CPHQ, presents “Patient Centered Solutions.” She will describe the various strategies that constitute patient-centered care and how each one impacts patient engagement. Identify specific methods for enhancing patient engagement and decision-making. Identify strategies you can incorporate into your clinical practice to better engage patients and families. CME category 1 is available for both AAFP and ACCME accreditation, and a continental breakfast will be provided.

Join us as Ronald Levine, MD, clinical professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health, presents “Female sterilization: techniques, facts, opinions and controversies.” He will describe multiple types of sterilization including laparotomic interval and laparoscopic procedures, evaluate errors of procedures that produce failures, analyze the controversial use of quinacrine, and assess controversies regarding the CREST study.

8.) Volunteers needed for WinterFest welcome and information station
9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Jan. 6 –7, first floor, Student Activities Center
Volunteers are needed Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 6-7, to staff the Welcome and Information Station on the first floor of the Student Activities Center. Short shifts are available. Volunteers will answer questions and offer campus resources, prizes and free coffee and samples from Jazzman’s Cafe. If you’re interested in volunteering, please fill out this form. WinterFest 2014 will be held from Jan. 6 through Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 20.

10.) Winter coats needed for the homeless in downtown Louisville

We need your help. Please donate any warm winter coats for men, women and children. The last day to donate coats is Friday, Dec. 13. We especially need warm coats for men, but anything that you can donate would be greatly appreciated. It’s so cold outside so let’s do what we can to help those that are homeless and show UofL cares. Please contact Julie Douglas for information or if you need to arrange a donations pick-up from the Belknap Campus.
11.) Calendar year-end payroll processing
The final 2013 paycheck for biweekly employees will be written on Dec. 17. The first 2014 paycheck for biweekly employees will be written on Dec. 23. All biweekly employees should print a copy of their last 2013 paycheck between 8 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, and noon Monday, Dec. 23. The last-check information should be used to verify the accuracy of 2013 W-2 information. All 2013 data will be lost after the first 2014 payroll is processed.
