    ·       VIDEO: Underground Railroad 2015” showcases the work of Mark A. Priest, fine arts professor at the Hite Art Institute at UofL. The exhibit features four series of paintings and drawings focusing on historically significant people or places associated with slavery in America prior to the Civil War: Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Charles Nalle and the building of Joseph Stewart’s Canal. The exhibit is on display at the Schneider Hall galleries and the Cressman Center through Feb. 28. Watch here.

    ·       VIDEO: UofL School of Dentistry students and faculty, along with other community dental health providers, offered free dental treatment to more than 100 children from 16 schools for Smile Kentucky! on Feb. 6. Watch here.

    ·       Kentucky to the World, a Louisville-based series of lectures showcasing individuals with strong Kentucky connections who are well-known in their fields, will present a 1994 graduate of the UofL School of Medicine who today is director of the Recanti/Miller Transplantation Institute at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.     DID YOU KNOW?

     

    UofL’s women student-athletes took to the court Sunday at halftime in the UofL-Pitt women’s basketball game to honor Professor Elaine Wise for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Chair of the Division of Humanities and assistant professor of English and humanities, Wise is responsible for certifying UofL’s student-athlete eligibility for the NCAA. Tom Jurich, vice president for intercollegiate athletics, presented the award. The Cards beat the Panthers 48-35 before a crowd of 13,656, second-largest of the season.

    1.) Save the date for 2015 Faculty/Staff Open Walls exhibit

    The fifth annual 2015 Open Walls exhibit of artwork by UofL faculty and staff is scheduled for June 5 to June 26 in the Photographic Archives gallery at Ekstrom Library. The exhibit is an opportunity for UofL employees who are not professional or exhibited artists to share their work. All media (i.e., painting, photography, woodworking, mixed media, fiber arts, jewelry, crafts) will be accepted.

    3.) Get moving with Intro to Nia

    Exercise should feel good inside and out. Get moving with Intro to Nia to help you find health through movement. Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that draws from disciplines of the martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that corresponds with the main areas of the body: the base, the core, and upper extremities. Visit us at GHN Tuesdays in February from 6:30pm to 7:30pm to try it out!

    5.) The NSSE is here; please inform your students

    Starting today, freshmen and seniors can complete the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) through an email link in their CardMail account. The NSSE is designed to collect information about student experiences and institutional performance. This information not only supports our reaffirmation efforts for SACS-COC, it also provides valuable feedback we use to improve the educational experience for our students. Please strongly encourage your students to participate in this important survey.

    6.) February EndNote workshop for Windows users

    Ekstrom offers EndNote training for Mac and Windows users. Endnote provides a platform for the storage and organization of bibliographic references and PDF files. Workshops provide hands-on opportunities for attendees to practice using a generic EndNote library to learn the basic features of citation management. Classes are limited to 10.     7.) Free UofL Autism Center workshop for families

    Feb. 11, 4 to 6 p.m., UofL Autism Center, 1405 E Burnett Ave.,

    Robert Pennington, CEHD, special education department, will present Effective Communication with Schools. This is the second of nine free workshops offered at the UofL Autism Center as a collaboration with the Kentucky Autism Training Center. Free childcare will be available for this workshop (must register in advance.) The purpose of these workshops is to aid families in understanding how to navigate the many systems and programs that may be helpful for their child.

    9.) Green Tip: UofL loves mountains

    The Sustainability Council invites you to send the Earth a valentine this week! Join us tonight at 6 p.m. in Chao Auditorium for “Deep Down,” a film followed by discussion about Appalachia’s struggles over mountaintop removal mining. On Thursday, a UofL bus will head to Frankfort for the I Love Mountains Day rally (departs Planetarium 10 a.m., back 3 p.m.). And join UofL residents who began efforts to save energy during the tfree-week Ecolympics by turning off lights and equipment, taking stairs and unplugging.

    10.) Underground History: The Archaeology of African Americans

    Feb. 12, noon to 1 p.m., Carnegie Center for Art and History, 201 East Spring St., New Albany, Indiana

    Free for UofL faculty, staff and students, but registration is required

    State Archaeologist Jay Stottman will discuss the findings from excavations at Farmington, Locust Grove, Camp Nelson, a Nicholas County homestead and urban sites in Louisville and Lexington. Stottman will discuss how archaeology has illuminated the lives of those who dwelled at these locations.
