1.) Time to nominate for Outstanding Performance/Supervisor of the Year
Deadline for nominations: March 4
The Office of the President is accepting nominations for the 2016 Outstanding Performance Awards and the 2016 Supervisor of the Year Award. Nominations are being accepted through March 4. The Outstanding Performance Awards recognize classified and professional/administrative staff for their outstanding performance and commitment to service. The Supervisor of the Year Award recognizes staff and faculty supervisors who provide leadership in creating work environments that facilitate work/life balance, professional development and performance management. Recipients will receive plaques, a $1,000 cash award and a letter of appreciation for their personnel files. President James Ramsey will also host a luncheon in their honor.

2.) Opening reception for ‘Capturing Women’s History: Quilts, Activism, and Storytelling’
Feb. 12, 6 to 8 p.m., Schneider Hall Galleries
Free and open to the public
Featuring the International Honor Quilt exhibited for the first time in its entirety, this exhibition explores Judy Chicago’s significant social engagement. Facilitated by Susan Hill and Diane Gelon, the International Honor Quilt consists of 539 individual triangular quilts produced by women and groups from around the country to celebrate individuals, women’s organizations, and women’s issues. In addition to the quilt, the Hot Flash Fan (1985) will also be on display.

This class focuses on core fitness that can easily translate to daily activities and incorporates all of the major muscle groups as well as the muscles you never knew you had. You will get efficient, quality, functional movements that will enhance and nourish your spine, revitalize your postural muscles and strengthen your core with every movement. Exercises are shown at different skill levels so each person can work to their own individual competency.

6.) Cap and Gown Ordering for May 2016 Commencement
The ordering web site is open for faculty and students to place an order for academic apparel for the May 2016 Commencement Ceremonies. The deadline to order apparel is Thursday, March 31, 2016 at midnight. Graduation participants should visit the commencement website for information on the ceremony and to place a cap and gown order.

7.) Dates set for 2016 Faculty/Staff Open Walls exhibit
The sixth annual 2016 Open Walls exhibit of artwork by UofL faculty and staff is scheduled for June 1 to June 30 in the Photographic Archives gallery at Ekstrom Library. The exhibit is an opportunity for UofL employees who are not professional or exhibited artists to share their work. All media (i.e., painting, photography, woodworking, mixed media, fiber arts, jewelry, crafts) will be accepted. Click here for more information and registration form.

8.) Brown-Forman Cardinal Challenge kicks off this weekend

The Brown-Forman Cardinal Challenge, an exciting, high-stakes business plan competition hosted by the College of Business’ Forcht Center for Entrepreneurship will feature 12 teams from all over the country and Canada, along with UofL’s own Izculvane Technologies — all competing for more than $100,000 in business start-up cash and prizes. This fun and free event is open to the public.

The McConnell Center will honor Abraham Lincoln’s 207th birthday Feb. 12 with cake and a 6 p.m. talk about his “Moments of Statesmanship” during its “Citizens & Statesmen” lecture series. The speaker will be political scientist Joseph Fornieri, director of Rochester Institute of Technology’s Center for Statesmanship, Law and Liberty and author of several books about the president. This is the second talk in the Center’s 25th anniversary lecture series.

Do you have an idea for a product that could improve patient care or enhance human health? If so, UofL has a new grant program to develop health-related, UofL technologies. The new UofL ExCITE hub offers proof-of-concept grant funding for a maximum of $200,000 per project. The pre-proposal deadline is February 29. For more details, the ExCITE Team will be holding two information sessions Tuesday, Feb. 16: one on the HSC campus in CTR 123 at 10:00 am, and another on the Belknap campus in Shumaker 139 at 2:30 pm. What is recyclable? Anything that tears! Newspaper, cardboard, junk mail, carrier stock, magazines, folders, printer paper, 3-hole paper and paper cylinder containers are all recyclable. As well as, plastic water bottles, aluminum cans, food containers and steel cans.

15.) Fair use in a copyrighted world

Fair use is essential to using copyrighted works lawfully. On the other hand, fair use is sometimes poorly understood, frequently underestimated, and typically undervalued as a lawful strategy for using copyrighted works in creating scholarship, developing teaching resources, and providing critical analysis of creative works. This discussion will focus on “user rights” and the why and the how of fair use, including its relationship to the academy, social policy, and digital technologies.
