    1.) Underground Railroad 2015

    Opening reception, Feb. 5, 5 to 7 p.m., Schneider Hall Galleries; Narrative of the early years of Frederick Douglass: Drawing Series Feb. 6, 5 to 9 p.m., Cressman Center for Visual Arts, 100 East Main St.

    The Hite Art Institute at UofL presents “Underground Railroad 2015,” an exhibition featuring four series of works by Professor Mark Priest from Jan. 29 to Feb. 28. The exhibition includes 74 drawings and paintings exploring slavery in America and the impact it continues to have on American life. There are four series of works, each focusing on a historically significant person or place: The Frederick Douglass Drawing Series; the Nalle Series based on Charles Nalle; the Tubman Series based on Harriet Tubman; and the Stewart’s Canal series based on the site of Joseph Stewart’s Canal. “Narrative of the Early Years of Frederick Douglass: Drawing Series” is on display at UofL’s Cressman Center for Visual Arts, 100 East Main St. “Life of a Freedom Seeker: Paintings and Drawings” encompasses the other three series and is on display at the Schneider Hall Galleries on UofL’s Belknap campus.

    2.) UofL Symphonic Band to perform at KMEA Conference

    Feb. 6, 4:30 to 5:15 p.m., Kentucky International Convention Center, Cascade Ballroom

    The UofL Symphonic Band, directed by Amy Acklin, associate director of bands, will perform as a featured ensemble at the Kentucky Music Educators Association State In-service Conference. Also conducting on the program will be Frederick Speck, director of bands. In addition, Matthew Nelson, assistant professor of clarinet, will perform as a soloist.

    3.) Theatre Arts Department opens William Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ today

    Feb. 4 to 8, 8 p.m. nightly, 3 p.m. matinee Sunday, Feb. 8; The Playhouse, 1911 S. Third Street

    UofL Employees, Students: $12; Adults: $15

    ‘Othello’ is one of playwright William Shakespeare’s most recognized dramas, but the upcoming production at UofL will feature a cultural twist on the tragedy of the Moor of Venice. Directed by assistant professor Daniel R. Hill, performances are at The Playhouse, 8 p.m. February 4-8 with a matinee 3 p.m. February 8. Video Promo.

    5.) UofL Cancer Center launches new website

    The University of Louisville’s Cancer Center has announced the launch of its new website, which provides information about the oncology/hematology bench research, scientists and physician-investigators, cores, and the oncology/hematology clinical trials program. Check out browncancercenter.louisville.edu.

    6.) More American than Southern: Kentucky, Slavery and the War for an American Ideology, 1828-1861

    Gary R. Matthews will discuss the antebellum social, economic and political issues that distinguished Kentucky from the rest of the slave and border states, identifying it instead with a national perspective and its own peculiar form of Unionism. The Filson Historical Society is a member of A&S’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

    7.) Narrative of the Sufferings of Lewis Clarke

    Feb. 10, 6 p.m., The Library at Oxmoor Farm, 720 Oxmoor Ave.

    Lewis George Clarke published the story of his life as a slave in 1845. It was the first slave narrative to be acquired by the Library of Congress and copyrighted. Carver Clark Gayton, a descendent of Clarke, will discuss the narrative and life of his great-great grandfather. Dr. Gayton is the former director of the Northwest African American Museum. The Filson HIstorical Society is a member of A&S’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

    Medicine Grand Rounds features Rodrigo Cavallazzi, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Disorders Medicine at UofL. Dr. Cavallazzi will present Mechanical Ventilation: More Than the Machine, focusing on the physiology of respiratory failure, how to tailor mechanical ventilation to different forms of respiratory failure and the latest studies defining how to best use mechanical ventilation.
