    1.) CDC predicts severe flu season: Get your free flu shot now

    Campus Health Services at Cardinal Station and HSC

    Kentucky is in the midst of a seasonal flu epidemic. The flu vaccine can still protect you against two of the three viruses in the vaccine and might mean that you have milder symptoms if you get sick with the third virus strain. Campus Health has plenty of flu vaccine available. Go to the clinics at Cardinal Station or in the HCOC on the HSC campus for your FREE flu shot today.     2.) Get Healthy Now’s newest fitness offering: Intro to Nia

    Tuesdays in January from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Get Healthy Now Wellness Center, 601 Presidents Blvd.

    Get moving with Intro to Nia to help stay on top of your fitness goals this year. Nia is a sensory-based movement practice that leads to health and wellness. It draws from disciplines of the martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that corresponds with the main areas of the body: the base, the core and upper extremities. Visit us at GHN Tuesdays in January from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to try it out! American Sign Language communication provided.

    3.) Fitness for Beginners offered at GHN

    4.) Update your exercise routine with Zumba at Get Healthy Now

    Working out doesn’t have to be boring or monotonous. Make it a point this new year to add some variation to your exercise routine. Try out Get Healthy Now’s Zumba classes, offered Mondays from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.. GHN also offers an “Intro to Zumba” class for those nervous to jump right—it is held on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:15 to 5:30 p.m.. Come get healthy in a new, fun and exciting atmosphere!

    5.) Sign up now for the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)

    The SROP provides UofL undergraduate students who would like to know more about graduate-level education at the university with a 10-week research-intensive experience in a department that offers graduate degrees. Mentors will provide students with individualized research projects. All UofL departments with graduate programs will be supported. Students should be, preferably, in their sophomore or junior year of study. The deadline is March 2.

     

    6.) Lab Safety and Hazardous Waste training scheduled

    Jan. 13, 9 to 11 a.m., Ekstrom Library, Room W104

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend this session. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years. Bring employee/student ID number to sign in.

    7.) Women’s Center seeks calendar submissions for Women’s History Month

    Women’s History Month is celebrated in March and the U of L Women’s Center will publish a calendar of events in the spring issue of the Women Center News. If you have an event or program concerning women’s issues for the month of March and would like to have it listed, email your information to Phyllis M. Webb no later than Jan. 30. Include the name of event, description, date, time and location.

    8.) Safe Zone I presented by the LGBT Center and HSC Office of Diversity and Inclusion

    Jan. 22, noon to 1:30 p.m., School of Public Health and Information Sciences, Room 103

    Safe Zone I training provides education on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community that contributes to a safe and welcoming experience for all members of the university. The Safe Zone training for HSC staff and faculty additionally helps participants understand LGBT-specific health issues relevant to healthcare practice and research. Please RSVP to Angie Buck.

    9.) PLAN announces the schedule of workshops for Spring 2015

    The School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies’ PLAN program encourages all graduate students to check out the Spring 2015 professional development workshops, including events on writing and publishing your work, navigating the job market and exploring various tools and techniques for teaching. PLAN is also hosting a new six-session, brown-bag series on diversity issues in academia this spring. Graduate students can find more information and register for the workshops on the PLAN website.

     

    10.) 2015 Celebration of Teaching and Learning features author Linda B. Nilson

    Feb. 6, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Delphi Center, Shelby Campus, Founders Union

    The 2015 Celebration of Teaching and Learning, Cornerstones for Teaching Excellence: Building Powerful Learning Experiences with Students, will feature a keynote presentation from author Linda B. Nilson. Participants in the day-long conference will also have the opportunity to select from 14 concurrent sessions led by UofL faculty and staff. Registration is now open.

    11.) Apply now for Delphi U Online

    The Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning announces an online course to prepare instructors to teach online—Delphi U Online. The spring offering will launch on Feb. 9 and conclude on April 12. Participants will learn two primary concepts: what it is like to be an online learner and how to effectively teach online. Who should register? Full- and part-time faculty planning to teach a new fully online course or enhance an online course between summer 2015 and summer 2016. Registration is now open and positions are limited.

    14.) Healthy blood donors needed for study

    IRB approval # 191.96

    Donald Baxter I Building lab 117

    Donors are needed for research studies of the function of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell responsible for destroying bacteria) and how diseases affect this function. Donors must be healthy, at least 18 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be medication free. Amount of blood drawn will vary anywhere from 50mls to 450mls and $30 per 100 ml (or part thereof) up to a maximum of $120 will be paid. Blood donation is performed in the morning at the Nephrology research laboratories of Kenneth McLeish, MD, located in the Donald E Baxter Research Building and takes approximately 20 minutes.

    15.) Professor to discuss gender and politics in contemporary Turkey

    $14/person; $7/students

    The College of Arts & Sciences presents the monthly lunch & lecture Meet the Professor series. Gul Marshall, sociology, will examine how policies on gender equality take shape in Turkey and how they reveal a colorful picture of diverse actors at subnational, national and supranational levels with various political agendas. She will discuss the significant roles played in this process by Turkish women’s groups, the Turkish State, and the European Union.
