1.) Harry Pickens Trio to perform as SOM celebrates Jamey Aebersold’s NEA Award event

Jamey Aebersold has been named a 2014 Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. The NEA, in partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center, will present a live webcast of the ceremony and concert Monday, Jan. 13. The School of Music will present the webcast in Bird Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. The Harry Pickens Trio will perform a concert prior to the webcast presentation, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

3.) Cards on Ice? UofL turning parking lot into ice rink

Get your ice skates ready and come join the UofL Student Activities Board and the Office of First Year Initiatives to kick off the new semester with Cards on Ice. Strap on free rental skates and reconnect with your friends while skating on the first ever campus ice skating rink. The event will feature Snowzilla, an outdoor tubing experience, horse-drawn carriage rides, free food and drinks and a live DJ. 8.) Retention Initiative: Alert students early with SAGE
REACH encourages all faculty teaching 100- to 300-level courses to use SAGE to aid students experiencing academic or personal difficulties. SAGE is an early warning system that allows faculty to instantly send emails to single students or large groups of students in order to recommend one-on-one meetings, advising, tutoring or other academic support services. Students that receive SAGE referrals early in the semester are more likely to pass their courses than those referred during or after midterms.

Join your colleagues in this session presented by Cathy Bays and Cheryl Gilchrist as they share a nuts and bolts workshop introducing you to practical and time-effective strategies to improve student learning. At the completion of this program you’ll be able to identify fundamental principles of effective learning assessment; describe the goals and key features of two to three common assessment strategies; adapt one or more assessment strategies for use within your own teaching context. 10.) Green Tip: Get your “Ticket to Ride” with newly forming UofL vanpools

Free
Enjoy a free lunch and learn how to save money, build community and reduce pollution by joining a UofL vanpool. Vanpools are seven to 15 commuters who live in the same area and ride to and from work together in a fully equipped passenger van. Each person pays a low monthly fare and the more you have in your vanpool, the less you pay. Volunteer drivers ride free. Ticket to Ride is helping us establish vanpools from specific areas including Southern Indiana, Eastern Jefferson County, and Shelby, Hardin, Oldham and Bullitt Counties. Kornhauser Library is now in the second phase of a remodeling project to provide more study areas, study rooms with improved technology, a café and better furniture. It’s a little messy, but you are still welcome to study here during construction. We have resumed our spring hours for 2014, and we are here to serve you. Our 2014 fall application cycle is currently underway. We’re seeking college graduates and career changers interested in pursuing medical school. Our program is designed for graduates who have taken minimal pre-med level courses (zero to 12 hours) and desire a structured program to prepare for medical school. We’re celebrating our fifth year and have succeeded in getting 78 percent of our students admitted to medical school. You could be next. Come learn more about what our program has to offer.

14.) Adolescent Fibromyalgia Study, children 12 to 17 years

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital will conduct a study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication as a possible treatment for fibromyalgia. Adolescent ages 12 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia may be eligible for participation. Participants will attend seven clinic visits over a 17-week period and will receive the study medication or placebo (an inactive look-alike pill) and study-related care at no cost.
