    Are you interested in becoming a non-smoker? The Kentucky Cancer Program will be offering Cooper Clayton smoking cessation classes starting Friday, Jan. 8 from noon-1pm. The class will meet each Friday for 13 weeks. This highly successful program is science-based and uses proven methods, including education, skills training and social support.     Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend this training. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years and may be completed in Bioraft (online refresher training). Bring employee/student ID number to sign in.     13.) Psychiatry: Perception, Reality, and the Unconscious Mind

    Brian Garret, MD, OD, and PGY-4 resident with the psychiatry department at U of L, will explore the definition of perception and how it defines our concept of reality, investigate how the unconscious mind contributes to our sense of perception, and demonstrate processes, and adaptations that may contribute to unconscious behavior and perceptual experience. Also, he will discuss the nature of the unconscious mind including reflex pathways and mal-adaptive behaviors.

    Medicine Grand Rounds features Nathan E. Brummel, MD, instructor in medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Dr. Brummel will present Undone in the ICU: Towards an Understanding of the Long-Term Consequences of Critical Illness, focusing on long-term cognitive impairment and disability associated with survival from critical illness, using the vulnerability hypothesis to understand risk factors, and preliminary trials of rehabilitation for long-term cognitive impairment.
