    DID YOU KNOW

    For the third year, UofL’s Cultural Center is commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy with a weeklong schedule of events and programs. The goal of MLK Week is to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King “with an inclusive campus and local community tribute that highlights equality and social justice issues.” Last year, there were more than 100 participants at events held during the week, and more than 150 participants at the MLK Day of Service, sponsored by the UofL Office of Student Involvement.

     

    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

    Kristen Lucas, associate professor of management and communication in the College of Business, published an article about the college’s business communication curriculum in the January/February 2017 issue of BizEd magazine. The piece, “Toward Better Business Communication,” describes the development and advantages of the curriculum, which focuses on five core competencies of business communication.

    Mondays at 9:30 a.m. Segments can be found on YouTube. WHAS-TV and WLKY-TV also run the UofL stories in their Monday afternoon and Saturday morning newscasts, respectively.
    The Monday, Jan. 16 program featured Speed School of Engineering students who participated in a competition with robots they built but can’t control.

    Airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on 93.9 FM TheVille; replayed on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Podcasts of all radio programs can be found on SoundCloud.
    The Monday, Jan. 16 episode featured Jake Gross and Casey George-Jackson from CEHD. They have started a Center for Economic Education aimed at giving middle and high school teachers the tools to teach finances and economics.     Starbucks opens in Ekstrom Library on January 17

    Starbucks will open in UofL’s Ekstrom Library on Tuesday, January 17. The full-service café will be located on the west side 3rd Street entrance. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 12 a.m.; Fridays: 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays: 12 p.m. to 12 a.m.

    Blockchain technologies: Greetings from the Peak of Inflated Expectations (presentation)

    Blockchain Technologies are maturing at a rapid rate and the potential is attracting significant interest across multiple industries. This presentation paints the picture on why Blockchain is an opportunity for software engineers. Kyle Culver, a UofL grad who now works for Humana, will discuss what “Blockchain” is, the current state and potential applications within the financial and healthcare space.

    Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)

    March 1
    The SROP provides UofL undergraduate students who would like to know more about graduate-level education at the university, with a 10-week research-intensive experience in a department that offers graduate degrees. Mentors will provide students with individualized research projects. All UofL departments with graduate programs will be supported. Students should be, preferably, in their sophomore or junior year of study. The deadline is March 1, 2017.

    Introduction to The Darwin Scholarship Programme

    The University of Louisville Department of Urban and Public Affairs and the International Center for Compassionate Organizations present a special free multi-media event with Professor Patrick Pietroni, DSc (Hon), FRCP, FRCGP, MFPH of the United Kingdom’s Darwin Centre Trust. Pietroni will introduce the Darwin Scholarship, an award program to support postgraduate study at a selection of international universities affiliated with the Darwin International Institute for the Study of Compassion. He will also discuss the scope and vision of the DIISC and open the discourse regarding compassion in our current geopolitical turbulence. The Darwin Scholarship Programme will initially provide funding for PhD students to study the role and relevance of compassion, cooperation, and altruism in the context of their particular disciplines.
