Presidential Search forums scheduled today

The UofL Trustees have set up a website in support of the search for UofL’s next president. The site, which includes both a nomination form and a feedback form, is at: http://louisville.edu/presidential-search. Presidential search open forums will be held Thursday, Jan. 18, 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the University Club Ballroom. The open forums will be live streamed at the following address: http://uofl.me/UL-Video.

College of Education and Human Development: Spring Research Conference 2018

The Spring Research Conference is open to College of Education and Human Development master and doctoral students enrolled at UofL, UK, and UC. This opportunity allows students to present research in a friendly setting and to get constructive feedback from faculty and colleagues. This year’s event will be hosted at UofL ShelbyHurst Campus on March 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This conference is free for all students, faculty, and staff.Deadline for abstract submissions is January 31, 2018.

Summer research opportunity for students – apply before Feb. 1

Students interested in pursuing a career in cancer research and/or treatment are encouraged to apply for the 2018 Cancer Education Program. This year’s program is scheduled from May 29 through August 3 for undergraduate students and May 21 through July 27 for medical students. Each student will be given $4,000 for their participation in this program ($4,300 for medical/dental students). More information is available online, program brochure and video. Darla Frazier Memorial Service

Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)

The SROP provides UofL undergraduate students who would like to know more about graduate-level education at the university, with a 10-week research-intensive experience in a department that offers graduate degrees. Mentors will provide students with individualized research projects. All UofL departments with graduate programs will be supported. Students should be, preferably, in their sophomore or junior year of study. The deadline is March 15, 2018.

EcoReps Lunch & Learn: Urban Forestry

Monthly EcoReps workshops feature a free vegetarian lunch and locals making a difference in sustainability. From maple-tapping and fruit foraging to shade, habitat, clean air and water, the role of trees in livable cities cannot be overstated. Louisville’s urban canopy has been under assault for decades, but the tide may finally be turning as the city recently passed a Tree Ordinance and citizens continue to organize. Get an update on the state of Louisville’s trees and learn how to get involved.

Biology Dept. Seminar Series presents Dr. Andrew Mehring, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

January 19, noon, 139 Shumaker Research Building

Ecologists now recognize cities as ecosystems, providing a new avenue to explore ecological theory in an applied context. This seminar will highlight the ways in which my research integrates ecosystem ecology into the urban setting, including the ways in which invertebrates in human dominated landscapes affect greenhouse gas emissions and heavy metal cycling. The research demonstrates that as the ultimate engineers of the built environment we have the ability to use cities as living laboratories, to create environments that enhance biodiversity and human welfare, and to shape these ecosystems in ways that allow them to function more similarly to their natural analogues and work for us.

Rescheduled: Maple Tapping Workshop rescheduled for this Friday

January 19, 1-2 p.m., Garden Commons, Cultural Center, Belknap Campus; Free
Join us in UofL’s sustainable garden to learn about the process of tapping maple trees and making maple syrup. Our workshop leader, Dave Barker, has been tapping trees and making his own syrup in Louisville for years. He will give a workshop on the process and then attendees will get to work with him as we install taps on our own maple trees located in the Garden Commons and around campus. Volunteers are also sought to help monitor and empty sap buckets for a few weeks (weather-dependent).

Having a useful, effective, and strong resume is vital for grad students pursuing a job outside the academy, and often useful for grad students interested in faculty life. Come learn about the differences between a C.V. and a resume, key components, and strategies and tips to make you stand out among a large group of applicants.
