On July 1, the University of Louisville is joining the Atlantic Coast Conference! Between now and then, UofL Today is bringing you a few tidbits every day about the 14 other ACC schools. Later, we will use this spot for daily morsels of information about UofL.
Did you know … The University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, is an independent Catholic university with more than 12,000 students on a 1,250-acre campus that boasts two lakes and 143 buildings. Among its well-known alumni are television personalities Phil Donahue and Regis Philbin, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and author Nicholas Sparks. 2.) Order your apparel for the State of the University
Order deadline Aug. 28
The annual State of the University Address will be Sept. 17 at 2:30 p.m. in Comstock Hall in the School of Music. This is a formal event and apparel will be supplied for participants. Faculty, executive committee of the Staff Senate and unit student council presidents are to register and order apparel online. Even if you do not need apparel, we encourage you to register so we can provide you with information about the processional. The deadline to order apparel is Aug. 28.

3.) Team captains wanted for UofL Heart Walk
Belknap breakfast, July 9, 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., MITC 201
The third annual UofL Heart Walk is scheduled for Sept. 20, and we are looking for individuals to serve as Team Captains. Nearly 700 people from across campus have helped raise more than $50,000 for the American Heart Association in this event during the past two years! Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in Kentucky. Join us as we raise money for research to combat cardiovascular diseases.

4.) Process, practice and learning through critical reflection

This half-day interactive workshop will explore the concept of critical reflection, a teaching and assessment practice that deepens students’ learning, critical thinking and metacognitive skills. Using hands-on exercises and reflection prompts, you will gain insight into how to connect your learning outcomes to critical reflection activities in a meaningful way.

5.) Second CRAFT post-doc seminar to be held
June 26, Noon to 1 p.m., CTRB, Room 123
Our speaker will be Natia Qipshidze-Kelm from the lab of Marcie Cole in biochemistry. Qipshidze-Kelm will be discussing her research on the interaction between fatty acid metabolism, microRNA regulation and cardiac function. CRAFT seminars are free and open to all post-docs, and lunch will be provided by the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

6.) Children needed for pediatric migraines study
Dr. Michael Sowell, neurology pediatric division, is conducting a research study testing two medicines and placebo for migraine prevention in children and teens. Children and adolescents 8 through 17 years may be eligible to participate. Subjects will be expected to complete approximately eight study visits over 34 weeks of participation.

7.) Neuroscience presents multi-modal MRI-based neurosurgery planning

The Department of Neurosurgery is pleased to have Bruce Pike, PhD, present Multi-Modal MRI-Based Neurosurgery Planning. Pike is the CAIP Chair in Healthy Brain Aging, the head of the division of image science and the deputy head (research) in the department of radiology at the University of Calgary.
