DID YOU KNOW

According to the Old Louisville Neighborhood Council, baseball games were played in Louisville as early as 1858, but the sport didn’t become popular until after the Civil War. On April 24, 1866, a team from UofL played for the first time at the “commons” on First Street.

FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

Gerald B. “GB” Hammond, endowed chair in Organic Chemistry, has been named to the American Chemical Society (ACS) 2017 class of ACS Fellows. The class is made up of scientists who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in chemistry and have made important contributions to ACS, the world’s largest scientific society.

Belknap Academic Classroom topping out ceremony Friday

June 30, 2 p.m.
Faculty, staff and students are invited to attend the topping out ceremony for the Belknap Academic Classroom Building Friday, June 30, at 2 p.m.  Dr. Postel will join Provost’s Office and SGA representatives in making a few remarks and signing the beam that will mark the highest point of the building scheduled to open for Fall 2018. Arrive a bit early and sign the beam before it is installed at the end of the ceremony. Rain site is the Lutz Hall lobby.

Today last day for Open Walls Faculty/Staff Art Exhibit

Through June 29, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., lower level, Ekstrom Library
The seventh annual Open Walls Faculty/Staff Art Exhibit runs through June 29, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Photographic Archives Gallery, Archives and Special Collections, lower level of the Ekstrom Library. There are 31 artists this year exhibiting everything from quilts to wood sculptures, and oil paintings to photography.

SAC power outage scheduled 

July 1, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A power outage is scheduled for Saturday, July 1 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the Student Activities Center (SAC). Electrical work is being completed to provide power for the new addition and Market Place areas. No other campus buildings will be affected.

The Gray Street Farmers Market is open every Thursday through Oct. 26, rain or shine. Some items available today include: garlic, carrots, cabbage, green beans, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, cauliflower, broccoli, summer squash, zucchini, eggplant, potatoes, honey, maple syrup, jam, eggs, meat, baked and canned items, gourmet popsicles, and kettle corn. Sponsored programs/research ‘Field of Science’ and UofL PCF, MIRA forms updated

Field of Science (FOS) categories, as defined by and reported to the National Science Foundation, have been revised. New forms are available immediately, and as of July 17, 2017, only the latest versions of the Proposal Clearance Form (PCF) and MIRA, which feature the updated FOS list, should be used for new project submissions to the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration (OSPA), Office of Industry Engagement (OIE) and Clinical Contracts Division (CCD). See website announcement for additional information.

Carnosine for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Study

The UofL Health Sciences Center is seeking PAD patients between age 50-80 with and without claudication to determine whether Carnosine/Placebo supplementation for 6 months improves walking ability.
