    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    UofL students Stephanie Dooper and David Exe have completed their bike trip along the Pacific Coast to raise money for the first student-funded Habitat for Humanity house in Louisville. They biked 1,038 miles from Seattle to San Francisco all “in support of affordable housing.” There are great pictures here on their blog.

    1.) Free Chamber Winds Louisville concert is Wednesday

    June 10, 8 p.m., Comstock Concert Hall, School of Music

    Free

    Chamber Winds Louisville and the Louisville Concert Band will perform a concert in conjunction with the annual Summer Wind Band Institute. The program will feature the world premiere of a new work by School of Music faculty composer Marc Satterwhite, “A Bouquet for Rabbie Burns.” Other works will include: “Mysterium” by Jennifer Hidgon, “Libertango” by Piazolla/arr. Grzelaczyk, “Serenade” by Max Reger, “Turbo Scramjet” by William Pitts, and the traditional favorite, “Americans We” by Henry Fillmore.

    Register to attend an informal information session to learn more about the application process and submission timeline for the 2015-2016 Paul Weber Award for Department Excellence in Teaching. The award seeks to foster and sustain a university-wide culture of teaching excellence by recognizing departments that demonstrate best practices in teaching and learning. Stage One applications are due August 14.

    3.) CCHS film screening of ‘Men Go to Battle’ is Wednesday

    June 10, 7:30 p.m., Clifton Center

    $12

    Filmed in locations around Kentucky and southern Indiana by a cast and crew of mostly Kentuckians, “Men Go to Battle” premiered in competition at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival, where it won the Best New Narrative Director prize. Screening is made possible by the Commonwealth Center for the Humanities and Society.

    4.) Deadline is Friday for Welcome Week 2015 Event Guide submissions

    This is the final reminder to submit your events/announcements for possible inclusion in the 2015 Welcome Week Event Guide! Deadline is Friday, June 12. If you have an event taking place from August 24 to September 7, submit it via http://louisville.edu/firstyear/events/event-submissions/welcome-week-events. The Event Guide is distributed to all first-years and many upperclass students, so this is a great way to promote your programs and events!

    5.) Healthy blood donors needed for study 96.0191

    8:30 to 9:30 a.m., Baxter I Building, Lab 117

    Donors are needed for research studies of the function of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell responsible for destroying bacteria) and how diseases affect this function. Donors must be healthy, at least 18 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be medication free. Amount of blood drawn will vary anywhere from 50mls to 450mls and $30 per 100 ml (or part thereof) up to a maximum of $120 will be paid.

    Additional Information: Blood donation is performed in the morning at the nephrology research laboratories of Kenneth McLeish, MD, in the Donald E Baxter Research Building and takes approximately 20 minutes. Contact Terri Manning, 852-1157, for more information.
