    The Kentucky Autism Training Center is part of Louisville’s first Autism Friendly Business Initiative, a certification program designed for local businesses to provide training in Autism awareness and understanding. KATC, FEAT of Louisville, the University of Louisville Autism Center, and Meaningful Day Services with the Autism Friendly Community worked together to develop the program.

    SSRN, an online library of social science research, has named several Brandeis School of Law faculty members as among its most-downloaded authors. In the law category, Professor Tony Arnold, Dean Susan Duncan and Law Library Associate Director Kurt Metzmeier are ranked in the top 10 percent of article downloads. Several faculty members are ranked in the top 10 percent of downloads overall

    Miscellaneous
    Latest response to SACS is now online
    UofL’s response to its accrediting agency regarding issues raised by a recent audit of the UofL Foundation and its relationship with the university is now online. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges requested information regarding three areas raised by the Kentucky State Auditor’s report in December. UofL submitted a corrective action plan to the state auditor’s office in February. The university continues to work with the legislature and SACS to address issues that led to UofL being put on probation in December. The recent report to SACS is available here.
     
    UofL Women’s Basketball tickets available for Monday’s game
    The UofL Women’s Basketball team will face Tennessee Monday at the KFC Yum! Center with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line. Tickets are on sale, including a family 4-pack for $10 per ticket. They are available online.
     
    PeopleSoft Financials System undergoing system maintenance
    The PeopleSoft Financials System will be unavailable starting at 6pm on Friday, March 24 due to system maintenance.  We anticipate the system being available on Monday, March 27 by 8 a.m.  University Reports will not be affected and should be available as usual during that time. Please note: While there are no significant functionality changes as a result of this maintenance, there are some aesthetic changes and new navigation options. A brief overview of the navigation changes and options is available online, under ‘Outlining Updates’ and ‘Expense Reports’ links.  If you would like to see a demo in person, we will be having sessions on March 22 in Strickler 101 at 9 a.m. on Belknap, and March 23 at 9 a.m. in Kornhauser LC 103 on the HSC campus.  
     
    Graduation Celebration presented by the University of Louisville Cultural Center
    May 11, 6 p.m., Strickler Hall Middleton Auditorium; Free
    The Cultural Center Graduation Celebration is an opportunity for the university to acknowledge the achievements of underrepresented students. This annual event recognizes all underrepresented students who are graduating from UofL in 2017, including May, Summer and December graduates. This year’s celebration will feature an alumni keynote speaker, music that will reflect the occasion, and individual recognition. Students are encouraged to invite family and friends to share in this celebration.

    Interim President Postel to hold open forums this week
    Dr. Greg Postel will hold open forums on both the Belknap and HSC campuses to provide updates on the 2017-18 budget. He will open the floor so all faculty and staff can have input into the process. The forums will be held:

    Nominations sought for 2017 Outstanding Adult Learnings, Faculty and Staff

    Applications available for Health and Social Justice Scholars
    The Health Sciences Center (HSC) Office of Diversity and Inclusion announces that applications are now available for the entering fall 2017 cohort of Health and Social Justice Scholars. This initiative provides a unique opportunity of educating professional and doctoral students in an interprofessional manner to produce high quality scholarly activities related to health equity, health and healthcare disparities, social justice, and healthcare innovation with the goal of benefitting underserved and disadvantaged populations. Additional program information and applications are available at the HSC Office of Diversity and Inclusion website. Applications for the Health and Social Justice Scholars are due March 31, 2017. Finalist interviews will be held during the month of April. Finalists will be notified of their selection status by July 1, 2017. The cohort will launch in August 2017.

    Come grab a seat at The Table to learn how Mission Behind Bars & Beyond (MB3) has transformed its organization and the lives of returning citizens over the past year. Guests will enjoy live music and a mission-driven dinner from West Louisville’s The Table and Cup of Joy, then listen to makeover stories from returning citizens’ themselves. All proceeds will benefit MB3, a non-profit organization that works to reduce Kentucky’s recidivism rates through faith-based mentoring and programming.

    African Night 2017

    African Night is an event to showcase the beauty and diversity of the African continent. Our annual event is a huge part of the University of Louisville tradition and enforces the spirit of diversity and acceptance.This year our theme is ” MAMA AFRICA” to celerate African pioneer women with the University of Louisville community.     Recruiting students for the Welcome Week 2017 Crew

    The 2017 Speed School Summer Camps are now live and ready for enrollment. This summer we have an assortment of offerings that range from App Development camps to The World of Drones Camps.     ‘Presidents as the Problem: Reining in the Cult of the American President’
    March 20, 6-7 p.m., Ekstrom Library’s Chao Auditorium; Free, open to the public
    The McConnell Center’s “Promises & Perils of the American Presidency” public lecture series continues with a talk by Gene Healy, JD, vice president of the Cato Institute. Author of “The Cult of the Presidency,” Healy notes that Americans have increasingly expanded presidential power over recent decades by expecting the president to provide solutions for all national problems. He argues that the president’s role needs to return to its constitutionally defined limits.

    University-wide Undergraduate Research and Community Engagement Symposium

    The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Innovation is sponsoring the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. Students, faculty and the community can discuss cutting-edge research topics, examine the connection between research and education and explore the broad range of research at UofL.     ‘Combating Human Trafficking, Sex Trafficking and Forced Labor’

    The Department of Criminal Justice, the Alpha Phi Sigma CJ Honor Society and the Paralegal Studies Program host the United States Congress/Library of Congress Ukrainian Delegation to speak on combating human labor and sex trafficking. Speakers from governmental, academic and non-governmental organizations will discuss aspects of combating human traffic in the Ukraine. They include Anna Bratkova, Olena Farymets and Julia Maliienko, guests of the World Affairs Council of Kentucky.

    The socio-demographic changes, both quantitative and qualitative, of the South Korean family in the 21st century have been interpreted as the decline of the modern patriarchal nuclear family. Speaker will be Jae Kyung Lee, professor emeritus of Women’s Studies at Ewha Women’s University in Seoul, South Korea.

    Native Plants workshop today

    Get outside and join us in UofL’s organic garden for a workshop on native plants and the vital functions they play in sustaining healthy ecosystems and low-maintenance landscapes. Our guest is Margaret Shea of Dropseed Native Plant Nursery in Goshen. We’ll plant some natives in the garden and then tour the Biology Department’s new Native Plant Garden at the Life Sciences building. Garden Commons workdays and workshops continue every Monday at 1 p.m. through April 24. All are welcome.

    PLAN hosts workshop on effective applications for teaching online
    March 23, 2-3:45 p.m., Room 105, Houchens Building, Belknap Campus
    GTAs are often recruited to teach online, even without prior experience teaching or in the online environment. While many instructors simply put their face-to-face class into a Blackboard shell, there’s much more to effectively teaching online. This session introduces best practices in teaching online and shares how to implement those best practices through hands-on experience with various applications.     Do you want a $500 honorarium, course development resources, tours and info on local sustainability issues, and an interdisciplinary collegial network all designed to help you integrate themes of ecological, social and economic stewardship into your courses? The Sustainability Council invites full/part-time faculty and GTA Academy members from any discipline to apply for the April 21 Green Threads workshop exploring ways to embed sustainability in your curriculum.
