This summer, more than 7,000 (about 5,000 undergrad and 2,000 grad) students enrolled in summer classes. That number is up slightly (about 100 students) from the summer of 2014. Because students enrolled in the J.B. Speed School of Engineering are required to take summer courses, they make up about 27 percent of undergrads enrolled.

1.) Brook/Warnock intersection reopening
The intersection of Brook Street and Warnock Avenue – complete with a Cardinal logo brick inlay – will reopen to traffic on Tuesday, May 26. Meanwhile, Floyd Street north of Warnock will continue to be a hub of activity, including installation of a utility ductbank. The heavy construction on Floyd could result in some re-routing of traffic, although north and southbound lanes will continue to be open.

2.) Cards Under the Stars: It’s the ‘Frozen’ sing-along!
May 29, 6:30 p.m., on the lawn between the Natural Sciences Building and Grawemeyer Hall, movie begins at dusk
Grab a blanket, lawn chairs and a cooler and bring the family for a fun-filled night of music with monster Disney hit “Frozen,” the sing-along version. Let the kids enjoy our inflatable park, play games, meet local mascots and special guests Anna and Elsa. Bring a picnic or purchase concessions from Sweet ‘N’ Savory food truck and Red Top Gourmet Hot Dogs. And don’t forget, Cards Under Stars returns June 26 with “Big Hero 6” and July 24 with a movie to be determined by campus-wide vote.

6.) Community forum for transgender health: Building Our Local Network

7.) Childhood obesity in African-American males 10 to less than 14 year olds

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to evaluate the effect of an investigational product on childhood obesity. African American Males from 10 to less than 14 years of age who are overweight or obese may be eligible for participation. If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he will receive the product or placebo and study related care at no cost. Compensation will be provided for time/travel.

8.) PKU study for 18 to 70 years old

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a medication in 18 to 70 year olds who have a diagnosis of PKU with a high Phe level. If the patient qualifies to take part in this research study, involvement lasts from 27 to 44 weeks with up to 15 study visits. They will receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost. Compensation available for time/travel.

9.) Type 1 diabetes mellitus study for Adolescents and Adults aged 12 to 35 years

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety of an experimental medication in 12 to 35 years olds who have recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. If the subject qualifies to take part in this research study, participation lasts up to 2 years; he/she will receive the study medication or a placebo and study-related care at no cost . 10.) Type 2 diabetes mellitus study for children and adolescents 10 to 17 years

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the metabolism, as well as safety, of a medication in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. If the child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will attend 3 clinic visits; receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost. Compensation available for time/travel.

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.

12.) Research study for nausea and vomiting after a scheduled surgery, birth through less than 2 years

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given by mouth prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting. 14.) Pediatric pain study, 7 through 16 years

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain. Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation. Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study.

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to assess the efficacy and safety of an investigational drug used to treat constipation. Children 6-17 years of age who have been diagnosed with functional constipation and are able to swallow capsules may be eligible to participate. Patients may be compensated for time/travel associated with their participation in the study.

Educator Grand Rounds presents: An Interprofessional Panel Presentation on Best Practices in Transgender Health Care. A stellar panel of local health professionals and community members will lead this Medical Education Grand Rounds in a solution-focused examination of two case studies related to transgender health care. Panelists, including a member from the transgender community, will share best practices in working with transgender patients from each of these professional positions: primary care, endocrinology, nursing, and mental health (psychology).
