Jonathan Weeks, MD, associate professor, maternal fetal medicine, Department of OBGYN and Women’s Health, UofL, presents “Opiate addiction in pregnancy: Time for a new paradigm?” He will discuss the use of buprenorphine substitution and maintenance for opiate addiction, identify other addiction treatment approaches and analyze the long-term outcomes for children of opiate addicts.

8.) Angel Tree for Animals

The tree is up and, once again, we will collect donations for the Angel Tree for Animals. All donations will be given to needy area rescues and shelters. 9.) 2013 UofL Cares Campaign online giving site back up
The UofL Cares Campaign Office has recently learned that the online giving site has been unavailable since late last week. We are happy to report the problem has been resolved and you can continue to show your support by making a gift online. To date, 270 employees and retirees have donated over $108,000. We seek 100 percent participation and are confident that together we can successfully reach our goal of $400,000.

10.) New research software modules and service

Join the Research and Innovation team for an open house to discover the “iRIS” system, a new software suite meant to make your lives easier in managing research. The EVPRI office has currently integrated COI and IRB modules in iRIS. The IACUC module is currently under construction, to be followed by IBC, then Grants and Contracts. This will be an opportunity to ask questions and offer suggestions. Refreshments will be served.

11.) Sponsor and decorate your own authentic horseshoe for Horseshoes for Hope

Public: $5 per horseshoe
UofL’s Riding and Racing Club is proud to host Horseshoes for Hope to raise money for the non-profit organization, Horses and Hope, an initiative of First Lady Jane Beshear and the Kentucky Cancer Program. Those who attend may purchase a $5 horseshoe, decorate it and either keep it or donate it to be given to a breast cancer patient. Lunch will be provided to those who purchase a horseshoe.

12.) School of Nursing Outstanding Alumni Awards

Applications are now open for the School of Nursing Alumni Awards, given to 40 graduates from the BSN, MSN or PhD programs who have made significant contributions to their profession. Anyone can nominate an alumnus, including yourself. Nominees will be selected within the following categories: Research and Scholarship, Clinical Practice and/or Education, Community Service and Engagement and Leadership to the Profession. A reception will be held March 8 and tickets to the UofL men’s basketball game against Connecticut will be available to purchase.

Suzette Henke will present on “post-traumatic fiction” and reconsider the modernist aesthetic in the context of psychoanalytic theory and new millennial trauma studies. Readers tend to be so intrigued by the lexical play, carnivalesque humor and pornographic titillation of James Joyce’s Ulysses that they often ignore its magical mystery tour through the dark recesses of the human psyche.
