In 1927, UofL assumed responsibility for medical service at what was then City Hospital. A decade later, during the Great Flood of 1937, the facility—now University of Louisville Hospital—was surrounded by water but had electricity and continued to operate, admitting more than 1,700 patients in three days.

Free, open to UofL community and guests
UofL alum Joey McFarland and his producing partner Riza Aziz are behind such films as Wolf of Wall Street, Horns and Out of the Furnace. They will be on hand to answer questions about their production company Red Granite Pictures. Following the Q&A, there will be a drawing for the Louisville preview screening of their latest film, Dumb and Dumber To.

2.) Save the date for Kentucky Women’s Book Festival

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 7, 2015 for the 9th Kentucky Women’s Book Festival. The festival, usually held in May, will take place next year in March as part of Women’s History Month. A great lineup of Kentucky women writers will be featured, so check the KWBF website for updates. The Kentucky Women’s Book Festival is sponsored by the UofL Women’s Center and University Libraries.

3.) Entrepreneurship Circle of Fame Induction Ceremony is Friday

The 2014 Class of the Entrepreneurship Circle of Fame will be inducted in a ceremony outside the College of Business. Kent Oyler, ’80, and Thomas A. Wimsett, ’86, both College of Business alumni, are being honored.

Blackboard Collaborate is now free for use for all university faculty and staff. You can use this enterprise-wide teaching platform to interact with students in an online or face-to-face course, or to communicate with colleagues within or outside of the university. The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine features Sohail Ikram, MD, UofL professor of medicine, director of invasive and interventional cardiology, clinical chief of cardiology, UofL Hospital, School of Medicine. Dr. Ikram will present Therapeutic Hypothermia, focusing on better understanding the pathophysiology of hypothermia, being able to identify current therapeutic benefits in cardiac patients and be able to further utilize future directions.

Dr. Katherin LaFaver, assistant professor, UofL Department of Neurology, will present Chorea—Patient Cases and Differential Diagnosis at this month’s Movement Disorders Video Rounds. 1 CME or 1.2 CEU credit is available for physicians and nurses in attendance. Videos can be sent to Dr. LaFaver in advance, or brought to the video rounds on a flashdrive as long as patient consent has been obtained. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided.

The Department of Neurosurgery will host this week’s neuroscience grand rounds featuring Dr. Mario Arturo Alonso Vanegas. Dr. Alonso Vanegas is a professor of functional neurosurgery at the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery in Mexico City, Mexico. His lecture is titled The Surgical Treatment of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. Our Experience and Contribution in Mexico. This event awards 1 CME credit to MDs and DOs and 1.2 CE Nursing credits.
