    DID YOU KNOW

    The UofL Parents Association won the Association of Higher Education Parent Program Professionals 2017 “Powerful Partnerships” award for collaborating with the LGBT Center on a new initiative: The creation of a “Proud Parent” T-shirt. The shirt features a rainbow design in support of UofL’s LGBT student population.

     

     

    Faculty and staff notables

    Paul Coomes, retired emeritus professor of economics, has joined the Pegasus Institute as a senior fellow. The Pegasus Institute is an independent think tank founded in 2016 that focuses on state and local politics.

    Monday, November 27: UofL scientists are working on a way to dry blood into a powder then bring it back to life for transfusion months or years later.

    Monday, Nov. 27: Doctors are missing opportunities to talk to young girls about getting the HPV vaccine that fights cervical cancer. That’s the conclusion of a study from Dr. Claudia Espinosa. Tim O’Toole discusses air pollution and its impact on heart and health. UofL students who are undecided have a new program to help them figure out what they want to pursue. Patty Payette and student Syann Lunsford discuss. 
    Tuesday, Nov. 28: The opioid epidemic has resulted in a five fold increase in babies being born with addiction. Lori Devlin-Phinney from Pediatrics talks about Neonatal Opiate Withdrawal Syndrome.  Interview with journalist Suki Kim who went undercover into North Korea and wrote a book about it.

Crystal Collins-Camargo from the Kent School of Social Work discusses their effectiveness as well as a new program to more quickly evaluate the mental health needs of kids going into foster care.

    UofL Farmers Market and Craft Vendors Holiday Bazaar

    Join the UofL Farmers Market vendors and craft vendors to purchase holiday gifts, such as jams, salsa, cakes and pies, necklaces, artwork, wreaths, crafts, UofL clothes and accessories and more. Aramark will have food and drinks for sale during the event. All but two vendors will take credit cards.

    The HSC Office of Diversity and Inclusion has a food drive going through November 30 for the House of Ruth in Support of World Aids Day. There are collection boxes in the School of Medicine, School of Public Health and Information Sciences, School of Dentistry, the Kent School, and at the VOA office at 933 Goss Ave.

    iRIS Specialists will be available for assistance with eProposals, Institutional Review Board forms, and Attestation and Disclosure Forms in the iRIS system.
