    Save the Date!     2.) Annual Corn Island Storytelling Festival is Oct. 23 at UofL

    Oct. 23, 6 to 10 p.m., Lutz Hall Lawn

    Free

    UofL, Blackacre Historic Homestead and the International Order of E.A.R.S. present the Corn Island Storytelling Festival Oct. 23-24. The Oct. 23 date is at UofL and is free and open to the public. A fall festival for children runs 6 to 7:30 p.m. with crafts, games and a native American drum circle. Storytelling begins at 7 p.m. Concessions will be available for purchase from Boss Hog’s BBQ. Sponsors include Fifth Third, Louisville Metro Government, Vice Provost for Diversity and International Affairs and Kentucky Homefront.

    3.) Thank a Donor Day is today on Belknap

    All faculty, staff, and students are invited to stop by between 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Humanities Quad to participate in the fun and festivities. Thank a Donor Day gives the UofL community an opportunity to publicly thank our many benefactors. As funding from public sources has decreased, private donations now and in the future are critical for UofL to remain competitive in attracting the finest students, faculty and staff.

    4.) Gustavo Arellano gives 3 LALS presentations on Belknap Wednesday

    Oct. 14 Room 139, Shumaker Research Building & Elaine Chao Auditorium

    An advanced screening of an episode of Bordertown, a new animated series on FOX which will air in January 2016, will be shown from 12:00-1:00pm in SRB 139. (Mr. Arellano is one of the consulting producers.) Free Mexican lunch will be served. From 2-3 p.m. in SRB 139, Mr. Arellano will have a Q&A session about his newspaper column ¡Ask a Mexican! and from 4:30-5:30 p.m., he will present the LALS Heritage Lecture in the Elaine Chao Auditorium.

    5.) Forum: Opening the Door to the Future of Fair Housing

    Oct. 26, 4:15 to 6 p.m., Brandeis School of Law, Room 175

    Free. Open to the public.

    This forum includes four professors and local advocates of fair and affordable housing. It will explore implications for Louisville regarding the recent Supreme Court ruling on fair housing. This event will be held twice. The second community forum will be at Louisville Free Public Library downtown, Main Branch, on Oct. 27 at 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Centennial Room.

    6.) 9th Annual Anne Braden Memorial Lecture

    Dr. Carol Anderson, Emory University historian, will deliver the 9th Annual Anne Braden Memorial Lecture, titled “White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide.” Anderson’s work garnered attention outside of academia in the past year with her op-ed in the Washington Post about Ferguson and white rage. A reception and book signing will follow.

    Grawemeyer Awards 30th Anniversary

    7.) Mysteries of Human Memory

    Oct. 27, 7 p.m., Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, Bomhard Theater

    Free, but tickets are required

    “Mysteries of Human Memory,” part of the Grawemeyer Awards 30th Anniversary Celebration, features short lectures, a panel discussion and question-and-answer session with former Grawemeyer Award in Psychology winners and prominent scientists Elizabeth Loftus, James McGaugh and Lynn Nadel. Free tickets are available at the Belknap Campus West Information Center, HSC Abell Administration Center and the Kentucky Center box office.

    8.) Last chance for on campus flu shots at Speed School today

    Follow the yard signs to find us! Flu shots are free to students, faculty, and staff ($5 for retirees). This will be the last flu shot clinic offered on campus. Flu shots will continue to be available through the spring at the Campus Health clinics on both campuses.     Experience Get Healthy Now’s mindfulness offerings in collaboration with Dr. Paul Salmon, faculty member in Clinical Psychology with extensive experience in mindfulness-related practice, teaching, and research. Experience the many health-enhancing benefits of reflection, stillness and being fully present. Come to a free Tuesday evening session or deepen your practice with a future session of the MBSR program ($80).

    Beyond simply decreasing your stress, this evidence-based KORU workshop will help you learn skills to find more satisfaction in your daily life. The course is designed to help you learn mindfulness through the practice of specific skills that calm and focus your mind and through the practice of meditation. If you are feeling pressured and stressed, or are just interested in learning a new skill that can enrich your life, these classes are for YOU! Beginners and experienced meditators welcome.

As many as 30 million Americans struggle with eating disorders at some point in their lives. Despite the unprecedented growth in the past two decades, eating disorders research continues to be under-funded, insurance coverage for treatment is inadequate, while societal pressure to be thin remains rampant.

    12.) Title IX Mandatory Reporter training is Thursday

    Are you aware that as a UofL employee, you are likely a mandatory Title IX reporter? Do you understand the responsibilities and requirements included in this role? There are two federal laws, Title IX and the Clery Act, that establish responsibilities for employees of universities to report certain types of crimes and incidents, especially sexual misconduct. To learn more about these laws, including the reporting requirements of “responsible employees,” and how to report, please register.

    13.) Animals in Art, exhibit and photo contest

    From the barnyard to the zoo, artists have incorporated a wide spectrum of species into a variety of mediums, including ceramics, painting, and graphic novels. We are celebrating this with our Fall 2015 exhibit, Animals in Art. Come to the Bridwell Art Library in Schneider Hall to see a variety of books featuring the wild world of animals throughout art in our display cases.

    14.) PLAN offers workshop on managing conflict through effective communication

    Oct. 14, 2 to 3 p.m., Room 300, Bingham Humanities

    Grad students need to be able to communicate with a variety of audiences – peers, mentors, committee members, and external audiences – but often conflict may arise from differences in styles, expectations, or personalities. At this session, participants will learn effective communication strategies to preempt conflict or manage it in-the-moment, while maintaining a positive and productive relationship.     20.) Children 8 to 13 years needed for anxiety and worry study

    Room 363, Life Sciences Building

    IRB #13.0923 Are you stressed? Is your child stressed, anxious, or worried? We can help! The UofL Developmental Psychopathology Lab is conducting a study examining the nature of worry and anxiety in parents and children. Parents and their children between the ages of 8 and 13 years are eligible to participate. Participants will be compensated $20 for their time and receive free diagnostic interviews, detailed feedback and a report outlining the results of our assessment.
