21st Century University Initiative
1.) Open forums scheduled for faculty/staff
Oct. 19-20
UofL President James Ramsey and Interim Provost Neville Pinto will hold faculty/staff forums to discuss progress on the 21st Century University Initiative. The forums will be Monday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. in the Kornhauser Auditorium on the Health Sciences Center campus and Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m. in the Floyd Theater, Student Activities Center, on the Belknap Campus.
Open Enrollment: We’ve Got You Covered
2.) Open Enrollment begins today
Employees can now select 2016 benefits online through Oct. 30. New this year, life insurance is available during annual open enrollment. If you are currently enrolled in Supplemental Term Life, you may increase one level with no Statement of Health. If not enrolled in Supplemental Term Life, you may elect additional coverage; a Statement of Health will be required. Dependent and spouse coverage will be offered, regardless of level of coverage, a Statement of Health will be required. Go to the Open Enrollment website for more information and make your elections. Be watching for more helpful benefit tips!
3.) Get Healthy Now: Enhanced wellness website; take Health Assessment today
It’s time: take your annual Health Assessment (between 10/19-11/19), required for 2016 participation in Get Healthy Now! Participating employees receive a $40 monthly premium incentive for participation (up to $480 annually). All employees can enjoy the enhanced features of the updated wellness website, a shorter health assessment, and a more personalized platform designed to support your good health! Heads up: All participants will need to setup an account on the upgraded platform. Health numbers (cholesterol, etc.) are helpful for a comprehensive, accurate health summary. Obtain numbers through GHN or your physician. Take action: Create your account and complete your Health Assessment today!

5.) ‘UofL Today with Mark Hebert’ features military initiatives, Fulbright
Airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on 93.9 FM The Ville; replayed on Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m.
UofL’s Mark Hebert hosts two weekly 30-minute programs focusing on research and insights from expert UofL faculty, as well as stories about our successful students, and staff and campus events. This week’s schedule:

Oct. 24 – Renee Finnegan, executive director of military initiatives and partnerships talks about training, education and medical research involving veterans as well as collaboration with Ft. Knox; three senior McConnell Scholar students; Marianne Hutti, who’s studying grief and depression in women who have pregnancy loss.
· Tuesday, Oct. 20, replay Sun. Oct. 25 – Gilbert Liu is doing research on the abnormally high rate of Kentucky children being prescribed psychotropic drugs like Adderall or Ritalin. Ann Swank is looking at depression in African Americans with heart problems and Paige Brewer is a Fulbright Scholar.

6.) Diane Ravitch to hold discussion

“The Death and Life of the American School System,” takes a look at how testing and choice are undermining education. Based on Diane Ravitch’s 2010 book of the same name that earned her the 2014 Grawemeyer Award in Education, she will join the talk via Skype.

7.) McConnell Center presents ‘Facing West after the War of 1812 – Resistance & Removal in Indian Country’

University of Memphis historian William Campbell, PhD, will consider the impact that the end of the War of 1812 had on numerous first peoples, colonizers and U.S. policy makers – and potential lessons that could be drawn as they relate to the ending of conflicts today. This event is part of the McConnell Center’s three-part lecture series on America at the End of War.

The College of Education at UofL is now offering an endorsement in Instructional Technology completely online, designed to help P-12 educators expand their technological skill set and successfully and appropriately integrate modern technology into their classroom. The Instructional Technology Endorsement (ITE) is the second teaching endorsement, along with the Classroom Reading Endorsement (CRE), to be offered fully online at UofL. 10.) PLAN hosts workshop on applying for fellowship and grants

At some time in your career, it is likely that you will want to secure funding for your research or a special project that you want to undertake. This workshop will look at the marketplace of funding opportunities and some of the basics you need to know to navigate that marketplace and successfully compete for those funds. 14.) Green Tip: UofL Sustainability Week is Here!
The week kicks off today with a chance to Weigh the Waste after a local lunch at The Ville Grill, learn about Energy-Efficient Homes at noon (123 Urban Studies) and discover hidden green gems on a Campus Sustainability Tour leaving the Cultural Center at 3pm. Tomorrow 11am-2pm at the SAC Ramp you can sample UofL-grown apple pie and bike blender smoothies, take a guided tree tour at noon and plant a tree at 1pm. Then bring your ride to the Humanities Quad for a drop-in Bike Maintenance Workshop 4-6pm.

15.) Free Shredding and Recycling on Wednesday

To celebrate Campus Sustainability Day on Wednesday, Shred-It will be offering free shredding and recycling services to the UofL community at their truck outside the College of Business. Gather up your old documents, video tapes and computer diskettes in separate containers and prepare to liberate yourself from all that excess stuff!

16.) Call for research study volunteers
Are you a parent who has experienced the death of a child? If so, you are invited to participate in a study of the grief experience of bereaved parents. To be eligible for participation, you must be a parent whose child died over six months ago. Study participation involves completion of an online or written survey. The survey will take about 30 minutes to complete. The survey can be found online at: http://www.sojump.com/jq/5481707.aspx
