Monday Flu Shot Schedule
1.) Free flu shots for students, faculty, and staff continue this week
Oct. 6
Students, faculty and staff can get free flu shots through Campus Health Services ($5 for retirees) at Campus Health clinics on the Health Sciences Campus and in the Cardinal Station Building by the baseball stadium. Other shot clinics are scheduled on the Belknap and Shelby campuses. A full schedule and a consent form are at http://louisville.edu/campushealth. Download, print and complete the consent form for fastest service. You must have your UofL ID with you to get a free flu shot.

2.) Annual Corn Island Storytelling Festival is Friday
Oct. 10, 6 to 10 p.m., Natural Sciences Building Lawn

UofL, Fifth Third Bank and the International Order of E.A.R.S. present the Corn Island Storytelling Festival. Fall festival for children runs 6 to 7 p.m. with a hay bale maze, arts and crafts and the short play “Ms. Peabody’s Apples” by the UofL Repertory Company. Children are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. Storytelling begins at 7 p.m. Concessions will be available for purchase.

3.) Free faculty/staff tickets offered for Oct. 10 volleyball game
Oct. 10, 7 p.m. game; tix available Oct. 10 at 5 p.m.
UofL’s volleyball team is taking on ACC foe Florida State University on Friday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. at the KFC Yum! Center, and faculty, staff and their families can attend for free. The Provost’s Office is offering up to four free tickets for each employee who presents a valid UofL ID at the Yum Center ticket office beginning Friday at 5 p.m.

Please join us for the 2nd annual Trick or Treat with the Greeks! This year, our Fraternity and Sorority Life community is partnering with the Engage, Lead, Serve Board to bring a fun, safe festival for children of all ages. Come enjoy mask decorating, pumpkin bowling, face painting, and more!

7.) PeopleSoft upgrade (October 10-20) and impact on Research Administration
The PeopleSoft financial upgrade scheduled between Oct. 10 and Oct. 20 will impact certain functions performed by the offices of Sponsored Programs Administration, Industry Engagement and Clinical Contracts. Grant proposal submission and award and contract negotiation will not be affected. However, account establishment (chartfield setup), amendments and other changes requiring PeopleSoft will be unavailable during this time.

The ordering website is open for faculty and students to place an order for academic apparel for the December 2014 Commencement Ceremony. Graduation participants should visit the commencement website for information on the ceremony and to place a cap and gown order.

10.) PLAN offers workshop on managing conflict through effective communication
Oct. 13, 2 to 3 p.m., Nursing/Public Health, Room 2035, K-Wing
Grad students need to be able to communicate with a variety of audiences – peers, mentors, committee members, and external audiences – but often conflict may arise from differences in styles, expectations, or personalities. At this session, participants will learn effective communication strategies to preempt conflict or manage it in-the-moment, while maintaining a positive and productive relationship. Do you have piles of articles to read? Do you have trouble remembering the last time you spent quality time with friends or family? Managing time during graduate school can be challenging, but there are ways to better balance the scales. In this workshop, attendees will learn how to better manage their time, leaving with suggestions, resources, and a plan for putting their own balancing system in place. Teaching philosophy statements offer an opportunity for self-reflection, provide a means of communication with one’s students, and are increasingly a requirement in academic job applications. This workshop will allow you the opportunity to reflect upon your philosophical approach to teaching and learning by comparing and responding to sample teaching philosophy statements. 16.) DEHS lab safety/hazardous waste training/radiation safety orientation

Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend the Lab Safety/Hazardous Waste session, 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years. Individuals who will work with or around radioactive materials should attend the Radiation Safety Orientation session, which is from 11:15 a.m. to noon. Bring employee/student ID number to sign in.
