    UofL’s Brandeis School of Law has again been named a Best Value law school by preLaw magazine. The rankings take into account a school’s average bar passage rate, employment rate, tuition, cost of living and average student debt upon graduation.

    UofL’s Dr. Kyle Brothers is part of a team researching appropriate ethical standards for biorepositories as part of a 4-year, $1.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health and its National Human Genome Research Institute. Brothers is teaming up with researchers at UNC Chapel Hill.

    ThinkIR: Researching locally, connecting globally

    University Libraries recently launched ThinkIR to connect UofL faculty with a global audience of scholars. ThinkIR is an open access, barrier free digital repository permitting UofL scholars to share their scholarship worldwide. ThinkIR provides a full range of services to permit faculty to participate. This presentation focuses on those services.

    UofL School of Dentistry offering orthodontics discount

    The UofL School of Dentistry is offering a $250 discount off the regular price of orthodontic care through the end of February 2017. Orthodontic treatment for anyone 21 and younger is $3,500, the cost for those who are 22 and older is $3,900. This is at least 30 percent less than orthodontic treatment performed at other practices. The school accepts many dental insurance plans.

    Why you should care about open access and copyright

    University Libraries recently launched ThinkIR to support UofL faculty in making their scholarship open access (OA). This “green OA” approach requires scholars to reexamine their relationship with publishers and demands close scrutiny of who owns scholarship and who controls its dissemination. Managing your rights under copyright law is central to controlling dissemination of your scholarship.

    Guidelines for documenting and managing controlled substances in research laboratories

    If you are a DEA registrant you have required responsibilities regarding controlled substance use in research. This interactive workshop will cover the three DEA required inventories; sample forms that can be used to document/inventory controlled substance use in research labs, guidance for completing the forms correctly, the process of transferring controlled substances between DEA registrants and disposal of expired/unused controlled substances.

    This is a reminder that Open Enrollment is in progress until 5 p.m. Friday, October 28. Visit the website to review benefit details and to login to make your elections. Open enrollment is your annual opportunity to add or make changes to your benefits including health, dental, vision, life, flexible spending accounts, and Get Healthy Now. Plan to attend one of the following benefits fairs where you can talk with benefit vendors and benefits staff: Get Healthy Now Wellness Center, 601 Presidents Blvd., Oct. 25 and 26, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Keep in mind the benefit choices you make during Open Enrollment take effect January 1, 2017 and remain in place through December 31, 2017.     If you are currently enrolled in the Cardinal Care Health Plan you need to take action during Open Enrollment to choose a new health plan option. As you are aware, the Cardinal Care Health Plan has been phased out and will be closed effective December 31, 2016.     Difficult Discussions Kick-Off Thursday with Frances Kendall

    Dr. Frances Kendall will kick off campus conversations about race with a session designed to build skills necessary to engage in difficult discussions. Dr. Kendall is the author of “Understanding White Privilege and Diversity in the Classroom.” This session is part of a two-day visit to launch the Office for Diversity’s new focus on developing cultural competencies that allow us to have more productive conversations about diversity.

    The Zika Pandemic – A Public Health Emergency and Louisville’s Local Response

    You are invited to attend a presentation by Dr. Sarah Moyer, Medical Director of Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness and assistant professor in UofL’s School of Medicine. The presentation will highlight current public health issues with the virus. The goal of the lecture is to review the history and epidemiology associated with Zika and discuss the current control program at the Louisville-Metro Health Department.

    Reducing risk of HIV infection with PrEP

    Nov. 12, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Louisville Metro Public Health Department
    Health care providers and the community are invited to learn about Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis to HIV (PrEP) at the Louisville PrEP Summit 2016. PrEP is a once-a-day pill that can reduce an individual’s risk of getting HIV. Symposium sessions will instruct health care providers and the public about who may be at risk and how to access and prescribe PrEP.  Demetre Daskalakis, professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, and assistant commissioner of the Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control, will deliver the keynote. Free HIV testing will be available. CME is available for physicians and nurses.
