Physical Plant’s David Schlaegel showed his Cardinal pride this month on the cover of the trade magazine Facility Cleaning Decisions. Schlaegel, who is manager of custodial services, won the magazine’s Manager of Distinction Award. He’s responsible for a total of 52 Belknap Campus buildings, including all athletic facilities. Campus-Submitted Announcements
1.) UofL, health department to fog for mosquitoes this week
The Metro Louisville Health Department and private contractors hired by UofL will be fogging Belknap Campus for mosquitoes this week. The Health Department will begin general fogging of campus Wednesday after 9 p.m. until about 1 a.m. Although the fogging is considered low risk to humans, resident students and others on campus at that time are advised to stay indoors. Private contractors will conduct localized spraying in landscaping and shrubbery Saturday and Sunday. The Health Department is spraying many areas around Louisville after heavy populations of mosquitoes, including some carrying the West Nile Virus, have been discovered this fall. This workshop is based on the premise that students can learn to write and communicate effectively in academic forms. Drawing from Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein’s book, “They Say / I Say,” this workshop will provide you with insights into the key rhetorical moves in academic writing, and help you show students how to frame their arguments in terms of the academic moves that are central to your discipline. Lunch is served, so pre-registration is required.

9.) Ecuadorian film Director Miguel Alvear to screen film today

Ecuadorian Film Director Miguel Alvear will deliver a lecture and screen his film at various events on campus this week. Wednesday, he will present the talk “Beyond the Mall: Popular Video Films and DVD Piracy in Ecuador.” The lecture will address the work of low-budget films and self-taught film-makers in Ecuador and the role of piracy in the distribution of films.

10.) Film: ‘In Dangerous Minds’ film premiere with director

11.) Mathematics Colloquium Series

Dr. Jintai Ding from the University of Cincinnati continues the mathematics colloquium series presenting “A Simple and Provable Secure (Authenticated) Key Exchange Based on the Learning with Errors Problems.” Public key cryptosystems are critical for modern communication but lack security against attacks from quantum computers. In this lecture, Professor Ding presents a provably secure quantum-resistant key exchange scheme.

Women and Gender Studies Professor Diane Pecknold will explore the reasons why popular music is such an attractive medium for girls, what music fandom and music making offer girls that other forms of popular culture do not, and how girls create identities through their musical activities. This talk is part of the A&S All Stars Series, a series of talks from Arts & Sciences professors that will precede home football games this fall. Medicine Grand Rounds features Michael G. Hughes, MD, assistant professor of surgery and director of pancreas transplantation at UofL.
