1.) African American Theatre Program marks milestone

AATP marks 20 years with a celebration. These guests will be honored: former theater chair Stephen Schultz, Founder’s Award for helping launch the program; and Shirley Reynolds Ewing, theater chair for Jefferson Community and Technical College, and Karen Hunter, education coordinator for the Lincoln Foundation, Pioneer Awards for nurturing black theater. An exhibit of posters and materials from AATP productions will remain open to the public until next fall.

Lina Mackelaite, MD, assistant professor, Department of Medicine-Nephrology, UofL, presents “Electrolyte Abnormalities in the Elderly.” Attendees will learn the cause of electrolyte abnormalities in elderly people, significance of hyponatremia in old patients and treatment options for different electrolyte disorders. Garcia will present “Genomic Insights into Critical Care Illness: Are We Closer to a Therapy?” focusing on increasing the awareness of health disparities in ALI and ARDS, and more awareness of new advances of therapies of ALI and ARDS.

6.) Free flu shots today on Belknap Campus and at HSC
Students, faculty, and staff can get free flu shots through Campus Health Services ($5 for retirees) today, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., in the SAC lobby, Belknap Campus, and 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Room 124, School of Dentistry, Health Sciences Center. A full schedule and a consent form are online. Download, print and complete the consent form. Then, bring it and your valid UofL ID to get your shot.
7.) Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

Deepen your mindfulness practice with this eight-session MBSR program, hosted by Paul Salmon, associate professor, Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, in collaboration with Get Healthy Now. Actively practice paying careful attention in the present moment, with purpose and nonjudgmentally, in a small-group setting. Registrations are limited. (An additional series might be offered in the spring if registration demand warrants it).

8.) Libraries’ Robotic Retrieval System undergoes preventive maintenance

The Libraries’ Robotic Retrieval System in Ekstrom Library will undergo quarterly preventive maintenance. Items requested from the RRS may be delayed or slowed because of the maintenance. Items that are delayed will be available that evening or the following morning.

10.) American Mathematical Society Sectional Meeting

The Mathematics Department is hosting the annual Fall Sectional Meeting of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). The conference will include talks and presentations from mathematicians and researchers from all across the country.

UofL Event and Conference Services now offers event space, logistics planning and registration services for multi-day meetings and conferences. Long-term rentals and lease agreements for Shelby Campus facilities are also available. Anne Bader of Corn Island Archaeology will discuss her survey of the 55-acre site. The results provide a look at more than 10,000 years of human activity at Locust Grove. Locust Grove is a member of UofL’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

15.) McConnell Center Talk: Leadership the Eleanor Roosevelt Way

Using vignettes and biographical details, author Robin Gerber will discuss how former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt’s actions more than 80 years ago can provide inspiration for today’s leaders. The free, public discussion marks the second of four events in the McConnell Center’s 2013 “Milestones of the 20th Century: Democracy in America” public lecture series.
