    Did You Know?

    The late Dr. J. Blaine Hudson has been honored with a street sign at the corner of 24th and West Madison streets in the Russell neighborhood, where he grew up. The honorary sign on West Madison street, between 24th and 26th, reads “Doctor J. Blaine Hudson Way.” Hudson, who passed away in 2013, served as dean of UofL’s College of Arts and Sciences, as well as a professor of history and Pan-African studies.

    Sept. 23, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Speed School (Duthie Commons)

    Flu shots are free to students, faculty, and staff ($5 for retirees). A full schedule and a consent form are available online. Download, print and complete the

    consent form for fastest service. You must have your UofL ID with you to get a free flu shot.

     

    2.) University Libraries hosting film screening ofPersepolis’

    September 26, 4 p.m., Room 117A, Ekstrom Library, Belknap Campus; Free

    “Persepolis” is a film based on the graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi about an independent young woman growing up in Iran. We’ll also be serving doughnuts.

    4.) UofL Libraries celebrates Banned Books Week with read aloud

    September 27-29, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Ekstrom Library East wing, Belknap Campus

    Join the university community as faculty, students, and staff read aloud from a favorite banned or challenged book on the east side of Ekstrom Library. You’ll also be able to create a book cover in the Writing Center and reflect on why a banned book has been meaningful to you.

    5.) University Libraries now offer access to Chronicle of Higher Education

    The University of Louisville Libraries now offer full-text online access to the Chronicle of Higher Education, one of the leading sources of information about academic affairs. The Chronicle is fully searchable from 1989 to the present. To access our subscription, use the library catalog or search box on your library’s homepage and search for Chronicle of Higher Education.

    7.) Kornhauser Health Sciences Library undergoing repairs Sept. 24

    On Saturday, Sept. 24, Kornhauser Health Sciences Library will be closed from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. for plumbing system repairs. No one will be allowed in the library during this period.

    8.) Debate program hosts high school debate tournament

    September 24, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Humanities, Davidson

    This Saturday, some of the best and brightest high school students in the state and region will be competing at the monthly Wilson Wyatt High School Debate Tournament, hosted by the UofL Malcolm X Debate program. The tournament runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Belknap campus. Most rounds will be held in the Bingham Humanities Building and Davidson Hall. The tournament provides an excellent and meaningful extra credit opportunity for students. Interested professors can contact the debate program.

    10.) Music eX Series features Michael Gurt, piano, with Paul York, cello

    September 25, 3 p.m., School of Music, Comstock Concert Hall 105 W. Brandeis Ave.; $15 for general admission, $5 for students with ID

    Michael Gurt is the distinguished Professor of Piano at Louisiana State University. He won First Prize in the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in 1982, and was a prize winner in international competitions in Pretoria, South Africa and Sydney, Australia. He has performed as soloist with the Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Utah Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Capetown Symphony, China National Symphony Orchestra, and the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa.

    11.) Doris N. Keyes Memorial Concert Oct. 2

    October 2, 1:30 p.m., School of Music, Bird Recital Hall 105 W. Brandeis Ave.; Free and open to the public

    Memorial Concert in honor of the late Doris N. Keyes, beloved piano faculty member who taught at the School of Music from 1970-1994. Keyes passed away peacefully in January 2016 at the age of 88. Her husband, the late Nelson H. Keyes, also taught Composition and Music Theory for years at the SOM.
    The concert program will include former students of Keyes, as well as faculty members and Keyes’ daughter and granddaughter, violinists Bayla Keyes Glenn and Julia Glenn. A reception will follow.

    12.) Faculty Artist: Bruce Heim, horn, and guests

    September 26, 7:30-8:30 p.m., St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church,

    Collaborating on the program with Bruce Heim are UofL music faculty members, music alumni and guest artists from the Indiana University Jacobs College of Music. The program will feature an array of music, including a contemporary work by Esa-Pekka Salonen, internationally celebrated conductor and 2013 Grawemeyer winner for Music Composition, as well as work by Ferdinando Paer receiving its U.S. premiere and Polish composer Wojciech Kilar.

    13.) School of Medicine JHFE Research Enhancement grant deadline Oct. 15

    The Jewish Heritage Foundation for Excellence Research Enhancement Grant (JHFE Research Enhancement Grant) program offers funding to School of Medicine faculty principal investigators to gather new data to improve a previously submitted a multi-year, nationally peer reviewed grant application that scored well but was not funded. The upcoming deadline is October 15.

    Get Healthy Now Wellness Center at Humana Gym

    Try our energetic, strength-based and stress relieving classes like Lunchtime Yoga, Power Vinyasa, PiYo, Pilates, Tai Chi and Barre Basics. These GHN offerings will focus on moves to increase both strength and flexibility. All classes are available to all fitness levels. First class is always free.

    15.) Get Healthy Now puts the ‘fun’ in Functional Fitness

    Saturdays, 9:30-10:15 a.m., Get Healthy Now Wellness Center, Humana Gym; Free for GHN Wellness Center members

    Functional fitness focuses on fitness that can easily translate into daily activities and incorporates all of the major muscle groups and even muscles you never knew you had. You will get efficient functional movements that will enhance and nourish your spine, revitalize your postural muscles and strengthen your core. Exercises are shown at different skill levels so each person can work to their own individual competency.
