4.) Dining venues are a hit; more coming soon
Response to UofL’s new dining venues has been very positive, and more changes are on the way. Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 7, the P.O.D. Market at University Tower Apartments will open at 7:30 a.m. Also on Tuesday, the Tulip Tree Café will be closed as construction of a Starbucks restaurant begins in Ekstrom Library. UofL Dining Services will offer “construction cups” of Heine Bros. coffee for $1 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday – Friday in the area just outside the venue. Other changes include:
- The HSC bookstore closed last weekend for construction of a Starbucks in that location.
- Within the next few weeks, Twisted Taco will open a temporary facility outside Louisville Hall with service until midnight.
- Construction on a permanent location for Twisted Taco at Louisville Hall and for Panda Express in the Swain Student Activities Center will begin next week, with openings planned for November.
- Construction of the Au Bon Pain venue at HSC will start later this month, with opening planned for December.

5.) Surplus Warehouse closing Thursday for auction preparations
1901 S. Floyd St., Belknap campus
The Surplus Warehouse will close on Thursday, September 8, to prepare for the upcoming auction scheduled for October 1. The initial auction list is posted on the Surplus website. The Surplus Warehouse will be open for viewing and reserving surplus items for department use on September 7, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. All reserved items should be removed as soon as possible.

6.) HSC Walking Tour available
September 13, 10 a.m., Abell Admin. Center, 2nd floor lobby; Free
Get to know your way around the Health Sciences Center. Meet at 10 a.m. on the 2nd level of the Abell Admin. Center at 323 E. Chestnut Street. Complimentary parking for Belknap employees is available in the Chestnut Street Garage. Enter from the Preston street side and park in designated Belknap spaces on the ground level. The tour will take approximately 90 minutes depending on the size of the group. Register online.

7.) College Students at Risk for Suicide: What You Can Do to Help

As part of the Cards SPEAK Launch and National Suicide Prevention Week, Dr. Laura Frey will speak about the prevalence of suicidal ideation and behavior among college students, warning signs to look out for, and how to ask/respond if students are at risk. We are the Noon Basketball Association and we welcome any faculty or staff member (including GTA’s) to join us in our new location in the SAC Gym 106L. 9.) #IAMACCEPTANCE Campaign set as part of National Suicide Prevention Week

As part of the Cards SPEAK launch and National Suicide Prevention week, the #IAMACCEPTANCE Campaign featuring nationally recognized speaker, advocate and educator, Hakeem Rahim, will focus on mental health on college campuses nationwide. Rahim will spread the message of It’s OK to talk about what you are going through, there is no shame in seeking help, there is hope if you are diagnosed with a mental illness. Research has shown that collaborative learning opportunities promote critical thinking and deepen knowledge through opportunities to discuss multiple perspectives. Group work that is well-structured, managed, and evaluated can also help students develop valuable teamwork skills. In this session, faculty participants from the Collaborative Learning Faculty Learning Community will share best practices for forming and preparing groups, and strategies for supporting group success.

Conducting a comprehensive literature search for a dissertation or thesis can be a challenging endeavor. Addressing common research questions from an interdisciplinary perspective, this workshop will focus on managing the research process at the graduate level. Participants will learn how to construct more productive and efficient searches, as well as track citation patterns over time.
