The free 2012 Bullitt lecture in astronomy will be at 7 p.m. in Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium and is intended for the general public.
Stanek is expected to discuss how, since the ancient Greeks, people have gradually come to realize the vast size of the universe and to figure out where our solar system fits into the cosmic history. He also will talk about the future evolution of the universe.
The physics and astronomy department and the Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium present the annual lectures through an endowment established by the family of former U.S. Solicitor General William Marshall Bullitt.
