Her discussion of “The Rebirth of Argentine Culture During the Post-dictatorship” will be the 13th annual Latin American and Latino Studies Heritage Lecture. The hourlong talk will begin at 4:30 p.m. in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library.

Shua will share her insider’s view of Argentine culture, particularly the literature and publishing business, as the arts have rebounded in the three decades since the end of the 1976-1983 dictatorship.

The writer was exiled to France during the last military dictatorship in Argentina. When she returned, she published her first novel “Patient” (“Soy paciente”) in 1980 and has since published in nearly every genre including poetry, drama, children’s literature, journalistic articles, essays, film scripts, short stories and microfiction. Shua’s work has been translated into a dozen languages and has won many awards, including a Guggenheim fellowship.

Shua also will participate in a bilingual reading and discussion of her work with her literary translator, UofL professor Rhonda Buchanan, at 3 p.m. Oct. 15 in Bingham Library, University Club. The free, public “Tea, Conversation and Bilingual Reading” will include both women reading from their 2008 bilingual anthology “Quick Fix Sudden Fiction by Ana Maria Shua,” illustrated by Louisville artist Luci Mistratov. A book-signing session will follow the event.

Shua’s husband, known for his portrait photography of artists, will present “Expressions of Argentine Culture through the Lens of Silvio Fabrykant” at 2 p.m. Oct. 15 in 207 Davidson Hall. Fabrykant will give a presentation in Spanish at 11 a.m. Oct. 13 in 202 Bingham Humanities Building.
