LOUISVILLE, Ky. — People can learn mindful practices to last a lifetime during a Nov. 1 mini-retreat offered by the University of Louisville’s College of Arts and Sciences.
The “A&S Faculty Field Trip: Mindfulness Mini-retreat” will run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Horine Conference Center, 11311 Mitchell Hill Road, in the Jefferson Memorial Forest.
Paul Salmon, a psychological and brain sciences associate professor, will introduce the group to the foundations of mindfulness. Quiet sitting meditation, gentle yoga-inspired movement, mindful eating, body scan and related practices will give participants an opportunity to experience a day devoted to slowing down and focusing on the present.
Salmon’s research and teaching center on mindfulness, and he also is a yoga instructor.
Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is a program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn to help people manage pain and stress. Salmon is practitioner of MBSR.
Retreat participants should wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle and any yoga equipment (mat, block, blanket) that they already have. The event includes a vegetarian lunch.
Space is limited and registration is required at uofl.me/as-mindfulness2014payment. The cost is $25 for the general public; $20 for UofL employees and alumni; and $15 for UofL students.
