ULSD students are receiving the Bud Tarrson Dental School Student Community Leadership Award, which highlights significant dental student outreach to vulnerable communities. Over the past several years, ULSD students have been regular participants in Remote Area Medical KY clinics with faculty and alumni. The students helped give more than 1,600 patients free dental treatment in 2011.

UofL students started the nonprofit RAM ULSD in 2009. The volunteer student organization is dedicated to humanitarian service and to increasing student awareness and involvement in the RAM Volunteer Corps. RAM ULSD is the first officially recognized student chapter. RAM KY contacts RAM ULSD about upcoming events. With support of ULSD administration and faculty, RAM ULSD organizes student participation.

The award carries $5,000, which ULSD plans to reinvest in efforts to serve more people through RAM projects in Kentucky.
