UofL’s English and classical and modern languages departments sponsor the Belknap Campus event. Keynote addresses listed below are free and public; those speakers are:
–Jane Marcus, English professor at City University of New York’s Graduate College and City College of New York. The feminist critic has written several books including “Hearts of Darkness: White Women Write Race” and “Art and Anger: Reading Like a Woman.” She will speak about “Ours in Struggle: Adrienne Rich” at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 21 in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library.
–Michael Bérubé, Penn State literature professor and Institute for the Arts and Humanities director. The 2012 Modern Language Association president, he has been a blogger and author of several books on cultural studies, disability rights and higher education issues including “Life As We Know It: A Father, a Family and an Exceptional Child.” He will speak on “Disability and Narrative Self-reflectivity” at 5 p.m. Feb. 21 in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library.
–Russell Cluff, retired Spanish professor at Brigham Young University. The Latin American literature scholar and musician will give his keynote talk in Spanish at 3:15 p.m. Feb. 22 in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library.
–Joan Retallack, Bard College humanities professor and Language and Thinking Program director. The poet, critic and biographer has written eight poetry volumes and won the Columbia Book Award in 1994 for her “Errata 5uite.” Her talk, “Cascadeffect,” will begin at 5 p.m. Feb. 22 in Room 102, Strickler Hall.
–Janet Lyon, Penn State associate professor of English; women’s studies; and science, technology and society. An editor of the Journal of Modern Literature, she studies modernism especially in Ireland, Great Britain and the British empire. Her works include “Manifestoes: Provocations of the Modern.” Lyon will end the conference with a 4:30 p.m. talk Feb. 23 on “Modernist Sociability” in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library.
